2013 Graveyard Shiraz, Brokenwood
Hunter Valley, Australia
This is one of the most iconic wines in Australia and world renowned as an exceptional example of cool climate Shiraz. The Graveyard Vineyard is the jewel in the Brokenwood crown, responsible for the company’s flagship wine. The vineyard was planted with Shiraz vines in 1970 – extremely heavy clay soils, yields are low, but fruit flavour is intense through the employment of meticulous vinification techniques.

“Forty-five year old vines. All French oak. This release streets the field. Some wines, even medium-bodied wines, just show us all how it’s done. Completely, cleanly, a whisper of nonchalance to the overt authority. The fold of tannin here does it but the fruit is velvety and sure, the complexity unforced; natural. It shows brilliant length, all components contributing. Licorice, five spice, cherry, mineral and slips of smoky oak. Ever so elegant, and ever so balanced. Completely immaculate.”

“Simply a Hunter classic: a savoury, spicy and elegant dry red of medium weight with a remarkably gentle but surprisingly firm palate that culminates in a fresh and lingering finish. It’s dusty and floral, with delicate aromas of black and red berries, cherries and plums overlying nuances of fiery, meaty fruit. Long and seamless, with a fine, chalky spine of mouthwatering tannins, it extends with great drive and purity towards a refreshing and lively finish. Likely to become quite smoky and gamey with age.”

Founded in 1970 as a hobby venture by three Sydney-based solicitors- Tony Albert, John Beeston and Australian wine critic James Halliday- Brokenwood is perhaps best known for their Cricket Pitch label, which was first sourced from a 4-hectare block at the foothills of the Hunter Valley’s Brokenback Ranges. The block was originally earmarked as the local cricket ground before they decided to plant a vineyard instead. Similarly, Brokenwood purchased their neighbouring block, which was intended to be the local cemetery, and instead planted Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, becoming their critically acclaimed flagship wine, the Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz.
Chief Winemaker and Managing Director Iain Riggs joined Brokenwood in 1982 and introduced new winery equipment and facilities specifically for premium white wine production. Since 1983, white wine makes up a significant part of total production and their Semillon is widely recognized as one of the finest in the world. Iain has also been the driving force behind Brokenwood’s expansion into the McLaren Vale in South Australia, Beechworth in Victoria, Margaret River in Western Australia, and Orange in New South Wales. Despite their expansion, they have managed to remain fiercely committed to producing unique and high-quality expressions of Australian terroir.
Iain is the driving force behind Brokenwood’s flagship wine, the Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz and its promotion as a unique Single Vineyard Shiraz. Rated as Exceptional in the Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine, it is still the only Hunter Valley Shiraz to feature. Iain is also a great promoter of Hunter Valley Semillon with the highly acclaimed ILR (Iain Leslie Riggs) Reserve Semillon as the Brokenwood flagship white. Both the Graveyard Shiraz and the ILR Semillon are amongst the finest of there kind in not just Australia but the world.
