San Marzano

Cantine San Marzano,Β  Salento, Puglia, Italy

Cantine San Marzano sits in the sun baked heel of Italy, in the heart of Primitivo di Manduria, where hot days, cooling sea breezes and iron rich red soils define the character of the wines. Founded in 1962 by 19 local growers, the cooperative was built on a shared ambition, to shift Puglia from bulk production to serious, quality-driven winemaking rooted in local identity. Today it represents a large network of growers farming hundreds of hectares across Salento, with a clear focus on elevating indigenous varieties and protecting old vine heritage. It is a modern southern Italian success story, combining scale with precision and regional pride.

The estate’s philosophy centres on the alberello, the traditional bush vine training system that has shaped Puglia for generations. Many of their most important vineyards are old, low yielding bush vines, naturally concentrating fruit while retaining balance and freshness in a warm climate. The intense sunlight of Salento is tempered by proximity to both the Ionian and Adriatic seas, helping preserve acidity and aromatic lift. In the cellar, San Marzano blends tradition with technology, using temperature controlled fermentations and carefully judged oak ageing to frame the fruit rather than overpower it. The result is a style that is generous and full, yet polished and structured, allowing the warmth of the south to show without tipping into excess.

The range reads as a deep exploration of Puglia’s key grapes and styles. At the top of the Primitivo pyramid sits Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria, sourced from vines over 60 years old, delivering richness, dark spice, and velvety texture with serious ageing potential. Anniversario 62 offers a more sculpted, reserve expression of the same territory, layered and refined. The portfolio also celebrates Negroamaro in both approachable and premium bottlings, alongside the vibrant Tramari rosato, a fresh, sea influenced expression of Salento. On the white side, Edda Bianco Salento blends international and local varieties, often with subtle oak and lees ageing, creating a Mediterranean white that is textured, mineral, and unexpectedly complex. Together, these wines form a complete portrait of modern Puglia, rooted in tradition, yet confidently contemporary.
