This is Rioja rosé with its sleeves rolled up and its sunglasses firmly on. Made from Tempranillo, it is bright, juicy and joyfully uncomplicated, all wild strawberry, raspberry, watermelon and citrus peel, with a little floral lift and a fresh, herbal edge. The palate is crisp, dry and energetic, with red berry fruit, lively acidity and a clean, zesty finish that keeps everything feeling wonderfully moreish.

It is the sort of rosé that does not need a grand occasion, just a cold glass, a little sunshine and something salty within reach.

Bodegas Javier San Pedro is based in Laguardia, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, where Javier San Pedro Ortega represents a new generation of Rioja winemaking. After growing up in a family of winemakers, he launched his own project in 2013 with a clear aim: to make wines with freshness, personality and a more contemporary feel. The Cueva de Lobos range captures that spirit perfectly, expressive, modern and made for pleasure, while still carrying the unmistakable charm of Rioja’s Tempranillo country.

Bodegas Javier San Pedro is a modern Rioja project based in Laguardia, one of the great historic villages of Rioja Alavesa. Founded by Javier San Pedro Ortega in 2013, the winery represents a new generation of Rioja thinking, rooted in family winemaking heritage but shaped by a fresher, more contemporary vision. The aim is not to abandon Rioja’s traditions, but to reinterpret them with energy, precision and a clear sense of personality.

Working in the high-altitude vineyards of Rioja Alavesa, Javier focuses on wines that capture freshness, fruit purity and drinkability, while still carrying the savoury depth and regional character that make Rioja so compelling. The range spans accessible, expressive wines such as Cueva de Lobos through to more ambitious bottlings, each reflecting a style that is polished, vibrant and deliberately less heavy-handed than some old-school interpretations.

What makes the estate particularly appealing is its balance of authenticity and modernity. These are wines made by someone who understands Rioja from the inside, but is not afraid to give it a sharper, brighter edge.
