2023 Quiñón de Valdlareina, Palacios Remondo
Rioja, Spain
Radiant and deeply expressive, the 2023 Quiñón de Valdelareina is the newest jewel in the Palacios Remondo crown, a wine that captures Garnacha’s generous heart and Rioja Oriental’s wild, sunlit soul. In the glass, it glows a vivid ruby-red, unfolding aromas of ripe strawberries, blueberries, and violets, with subtle notes of wild herbs and warm earth. The palate is plush yet composed, the fruit carried by fine, chalk-dusted tannins and lifted by a fresh, herbal edge. There’s a natural energy beneath the richness, a sense of altitude, air, and purity, that makes this wine as elegant as it is evocative.
For when: you want red fruit and poetry in the same sip.
Pairs with: rosemary lamb, grilled vegetables, or slow-roasted tomato pasta.
If this wine were a scent: wildflowers after summer rain - ripe, floral, and alive with warmth.
Sourced from 90-year-old vines high in Las Mulgas at 650 metres near the Navarra border, Valdelareina sits on deeper, red-hued soils than its sibling Valmira. This gives the wine greater volume and ripeness, while retaining the tension and perfume that define Álvaro Palacios’ Rioja style. Fermented gently and bottled with minimal intervention, it showcases Garnacha’s ability to balance sensuality and structure. Awarded 96 points by Luis Gutiérrez (Wine Advocate), the 2023 vintage is a confident debut, darker-fruited, a touch more rustic, and beautifully resonant. A queenly expression of Garnacha from one of Spain’s most visionary winemakers.

At the heart of Rioja Oriental, on the sun-soaked slopes of Mount Yerga, lies Palacios Remondo, a family estate that blends generations of tradition with the restless innovation of one of Spain’s greatest winemakers, Álvaro Palacios. Founded in 1948 by José Palacios Remondo, the bodega is today a benchmark for modern Rioja, where Garnacha is restored to its rightful place as the grape of elegance, fragrance, and vitality. Under Álvaro’s direction, the estate has shifted from oak-heavy convention to a purer, terroir-driven expression, wines that shimmer with light, freshness, and minerality.
The vineyards, farmed organically and increasingly biodynamically, are scattered across the high-altitude terraces and rolling hills of Alfaro, with the most prized sites reaching over 600 metres above sea level. Here, Garnacha thrives in limestone and red clay soils, tempered by mountain breezes that preserve acidity and lift. The estate’s single-vineyard cuvées, such as Quiñón de Valmira and the newly introduced Quiñón de Valdelareina, showcase the extraordinary diversity and finesse possible in Rioja Oriental when treated with precision and respect.
With meticulous viticulture, gentle vinification, and an unwavering belief that great wine is born, not made, Palacios Remondo has become a symbol of Rioja’s quiet renaissance. Each release carries the clarity, grace, and integrity that define Álvaro Palacios’ philosophy - wines of place and poetry, crafted with humility and vision.
