The Rioja Favourites Gift Box

Rioja, Spain

Rioja’s Perfect Pair

Two of our most popular wines, brought together in one rather special Christmas gift. This Rioja duo pairs the mellow, savoury charm of Bodegas Ondarre’s Gran Reserva with the fragrant elegance of La Rioja Alta’s celebrated Viña Ardanza. Presented in a gift box, it is a thoughtful present for the Rioja lover in the family, a generous thank-you for a festive host or a delicious way to stock the table for the celebrations ahead. Two customer favourites, each with its own personality and plenty of reasons to linger over dinner.

2019 Rioja Gran Reserva, Bodegas Ondarre

Warm, expressive and beautifully mellow, Ondarre’s Gran Reserva captures the comforting appeal of traditionally aged Rioja. Red cherry and ripe plum mingle with dried fruit, cedar and vanilla, opening towards tobacco, leather and gentle baking spice. The aromas have an inviting savoury depth, with the fruit still clearly present beneath the layers developed through patient maturation.

The palate is rounded and velvety, with supple tannins and enough freshness to keep its generous flavours balanced. Cherry, toasted oak and sweet spice carry through a lingering, savoury finish. Already rewarding to drink, this is a bottle for leisurely winter dinners, bringing the pleasure of mature Rioja without needing years of further cellaring.

2020 Viña Ardanza Reserva, La Rioja Alta

Poised, fragrant and full of detail, Viña Ardanza brings a brighter, more finely structured expression of Rioja to the pairing. Cherry, redcurrant and blueberry unfold alongside cedar, clove and nutmeg, with subtle cocoa and toasted oak adding depth. A delicate balsamic lift keeps the bouquet fresh, revealing more of its complexity as the wine opens in the glass.

The palate combines generous fruit with polished tannins and lively acidity, giving it both breadth and definition. Supple through the middle, it builds towards a long finish of red fruit and savoury spice. Delicious with a little air now, it also has the balance to develop beautifully in bottle, making this a gift with something to enjoy immediately and something worth setting aside.

For when: One favourite Rioja would make a lovely present, but two make Christmas.

Pairs with: Enjoy with rosemary-roasted lamb, rib of beef, roast turkey with chestnut stuffing, slow-braised venison, mushroom Wellington or mature Manchego.

This gift box contains one 75cl bottle of 2019 Bodegas Ondarre Rioja Gran Reserva and one 75cl bottle of 2020 La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva. Both celebrate Rioja’s tradition of patient oak and bottle ageing, while offering an engaging contrast: Ondarre’s mellow, savoury generosity alongside Ardanza’s fragrant fruit and elegant structure. Together, they make a rewarding introduction to the region and a welcome gift for someone who already knows its charms.

Founded in 1985 in the historic town of Viana, Bodegas Ondarre has built its reputation on characterful Rioja and particularly accomplished Reserva and Gran Reserva wines. Longstanding relationships with local growers provide access to vineyards around the town, while careful maturation in French and American oak develops the savoury complexity that defines its traditional style.

La Rioja Alta was established in 1890 by five Riojan and Basque families in Haro’s Station District. It remains one of the great names of classical Rioja, renowned for wines that retain freshness and finesse through extended ageing. Under head winemaker Julio Sáenz, meticulous grape selection and modern cellar precision complement traditional practices, including manual racking and the use of barrels made in the house’s own cooperage.

Together, these producers show why Rioja remains such a rewarding region to explore: distinctive vineyard sources, carefully judged blends and the patience to release wines with both depth and drinking appeal.

2019 Rioja Gran Reserva, Bodegas Ondarre

A blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Mazuelo. Fermentation takes place with selected yeasts at 25–28°C, with pumping over and rack-and-return techniques used to extract colour, flavour and tannin.

Malolactic conversion takes place in new oak casks from Missouri and central France. The wine then spends 28 months ageing on its lees with regular racking, followed by 32 months in bottle. This extended maturation develops its mellow texture and layered savoury character. Bottled without tartaric stabilisation, it may develop a natural deposit, so careful decanting is recommended.

Alcohol: 13.5%.

2020 Viña Ardanza Reserva, La Rioja Alta

A blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. Tempranillo comes from La Cuesta in Fuenmayor and Montecillo in Cenicero, with vines more than 30 years old. Garnacha is sourced from La Pedriza in Tudelilla, a stony vineyard at approximately 550 metres.

The grapes were harvested by hand and transported under refrigeration before optical sorting. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations completed naturally. Tempranillo matured for 36 months in American oak, while Garnacha spent 30 months in barrel, with 20% new oak used. Regular manual racking accompanied maturation, and the final blend was bottled in November 2024.

Alcohol: 14.5%. Residual sugar: 2.1g/L. Total acidity: 5.7g/L. pH: 3.57. Recommended drinking window: 2026–2042.
