2024 Valpolicella Classico XVII, Guerrieri Rizzardi

Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy

Cherry Pulse

Guerrieri Rizzardi’s 2024 Cuvée XVII is Valpolicella Classico in its most joyful, polished form: bright, fragrant, supple and made for the table. Corvina and Corvinone bring the classic cherry and spice, while Rondinella, Merlot and Croatina add softness, colour and a little savoury depth. Expect marasca cherry, red plum, black pepper, violet, soft herbs and a gentle earthy note.

On the palate, it is medium-bodied, rounded and wonderfully drinkable, with juicy red fruit, fresh acidity and smooth tannins. There is more depth than a simple quaffer, but it keeps the easy charm that makes good Valpolicella so useful. No heaviness, no excess, just pure cherry fruit, spice and a clean, savoury finish.

A midweek Italian dinner deserves a bottle with proper pedigree.

Guerrieri Rizzardi is one of the great historic names of Veneto, with roots in Valpolicella, Bardolino and Soave. Cuvée XVII honours the 17th century, when the Rizzardi family first established itself in Negrar, and the wine captures that heritage in a fresh, approachable style. Estate-grown and bottled from vineyards in the Valpolicella Classico zone, it is a smart introduction to a house known for elegance, regional character and serious vineyard ownership.

Guerrieri Rizzardi is one of Veneto’s most historic family estates, formed from the union of two noble Veronese families: the Guerrieri of Bardolino and the Rizzardi of Negrar in Valpolicella. The Rizzardi family’s Valpolicella story goes back to the 17th century, with the first Rizzardi-labelled wines produced in 1678. Today the estate is run by Agostino and Giuseppe Rizzardi, the thirteenth generation, with vineyards spread across the classic zones of Valpolicella, Bardolino and Soave.

The estate has long been associated with serious vineyard ownership, elegant regional wines and a careful balance between heritage and modernity. Important names in the family story include Antonio Rizzardi, a major figure in the development of Bardolino, and Contessa Maria Cristina Loredan Rizzardi, whose vision helped expand the estate’s vineyards and reputation. Guerrieri Rizzardi now works from a modern, sustainability-minded winery in Bardolino, while its Valpolicella heart remains around Negrar, Pojega and Villa Rizzardi. It is a producer with history, control of its vineyards and real Veneto authority.

Cuvée XVII 2024 comes from estate vineyards in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico zone, including parcels around Negrar, Pojega, Calcarole, Rovereti and Tomenighe. The soils are clay-sandy with medium to high limestone content, rich in magnesium and calcium, helping give the wine both softness and freshness. Vines are trained using Double Veronese pergola and simple Guyot systems, with vine ages ranging from around 20 to 45 years.

The blend is built around Corvina and Corvinone, supported by Rondinella, Merlot and Croatina. The grapes are harvested by hand or machine depending on the site, then destemmed before fermentation. Alcoholic fermentation lasts around 10 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is then matured for 3 to 12 months in stainless steel and concrete tanks, with no oak influence, preserving purity of fruit, spice and the fresh, savoury character of classic Valpolicella.
