2023 Chianti Classico Riserva, Castellare di Castellina

Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy

Castellare di Castellina’s 2023 Chianti Classico Riserva is classic Tuscan restraint with real inner glow. Made only from native varieties, Sangioveto and Canaiolo, it opens with red cherry, redcurrant, violet, rose, liquorice, cinnamon, cedar and a subtle mineral note. It feels polished rather than glossy, with the estate’s usual clarity and quiet confidence.

On the palate, it is fresh, elegant and finely structured, with vivid red fruit carried by bright acidity and velvety velvety tannins. The 2023 vintage gives a precise, drinkable style, but there is enough depth, oak seasoning and savoury length to make this feel properly Riserva. It is Chianti Classico in the best sense: fragrant, balanced, food-loving and unmistakably Tuscan.

For when
A proper Tuscan dinner needs a bottle with charm, structure and a little gravitas.

Pairs with
Bistecca alla Fiorentina, roast lamb, wild boar ragù, rabbit, roast chicken, grilled sausages, mushroom pasta, pecorino or medium-aged cheeses.

Castellare di Castellina is one of the great names of Chianti Classico, founded by Paolo Panerai in the 1970s during the modern renaissance of Italian wine. The estate has always championed native Tuscan varieties rather than international fashion, and this Riserva captures that philosophy beautifully. No Cabernet, no Merlot, just Sangioveto, Canaiolo, limestone, altitude and the elegant discipline of a benchmark Castellina estate.

Castellare di Castellina is a benchmark Chianti Classico estate, created in the 1970s by Paolo Panerai through the union of four historic properties: Castellare, Caselle, San Niccolò and Le Case. From the start, the estate stood for serious Tuscan identity, combining tradition with the ambition that helped shape Italy’s modern fine-wine movement.

Set in Castellina in Chianti, the vineyards sit among woodland and olive groves at up to 400 metres above sea level, giving Sangiovese the freshness and aromatic lift it needs. Castellare is particularly admired for its commitment to native varieties, especially Sangioveto and Canaiolo, a philosophy most famously expressed in its flagship I Sodi di San Niccolò. The labels are instantly recognisable too, each vintage featuring a different bird as a symbol of the estate’s respect for biodiversity and the natural life of its vineyards.

With winemaker Alessandro Cellai linked to the estate’s modern reputation, Castellare remains one of the most reliable names for refined, ageworthy Chianti Classico.

The 2023 Chianti Classico Riserva is made from a careful selection of the estate’s best grapes, with a blend of 90% Sangioveto and 10% Canaiolo. The fruit comes from vineyards in Castellina in Chianti, planted on limestone soils at around 350 to 400 metres above sea level. Vines are trained using single-arched cane Guyot, with a planting density of around 3,500 vines per hectare and yields of about 60 quintals per hectare.

Harvest took place in October. Vinification was carried out in stainless steel, preserving the wine’s red-fruited purity and fresh floral character before ageing. The wine then matured for 15 months in French oak barrels of 225 and 500 litres, followed by a further 15 months in bottle before release.

The 2023 Chianti Classico vintage produced fresh, elegant wines after a balanced growing season. Favourable summer conditions and careful harvest timing helped preserve bright acidity, refined tannins and moderate alcohol, giving this Riserva its classic, precise and highly drinkable profile.
