2023 Morgon Côte du Py, Maison Piron

Beaujolais, France

Blue Stone

Maison Piron’s 2023 Morgon Côte du Py is Beaujolais with its serious face on. From Morgon’s most famous hill, this is Gamay with depth, structure and a dark mineral charge: black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, liquorice, violet, cracked pepper and graphite, with a subtle earthy spice running underneath.

On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, fresh and finely gripped, with tangy dark fruit, chalky tannins and a long, stony finish. There is plenty of youthful energy, but also the density and structure that make Côte du Py one of the great ageing terroirs of Beaujolais. Drink now with food, or give it a few years and let it begin to take on that beautifully Burgundian, Pinot-like complexity Morgon is famous for.

For when
A roast chicken dinner deserves something brighter than Burgundy and more serious than simple Beaujolais.

Pairs with
Roast chicken, duck, pork belly, charcuterie, mushroom dishes, steak frites, sausages, Morbier, Comté or a proper autumn game pie.

If this wine were…
A blue-black stone warmed by the last light over Morgon.

Maison Piron sits at the foot of the Côte du Py hill and is one of the historic names of Morgon, with family roots in Beaujolais reaching back to 1590. This cuvée comes from the great blue-stone slopes that give Morgon its power, mineral edge and capacity to age. It is a benchmark style for anyone who wants to understand why serious Gamay has such a devoted following.

Maison Piron is one of the historic houses of Beaujolais, based in Villié-Morgon at the foot of the Côte du Py hill. The Piron family’s roots in the region stretch back to 1590, giving the estate a rare sense of continuity in a region now enjoying a major fine-wine revival. Today, the house is associated with thoughtful, terroir-led expressions of Gamay, especially from Morgon, where the family works with some of the appellation’s most prized parcels.

Côte du Py is central to the Maison Piron story. This volcanic hill is widely regarded as Morgon’s greatest site, known for its blue stone soils, firm structure and wines that can age beautifully. Under the guidance of Julien Revillon, Maison Piron continues to champion Beaujolais as a source of serious, characterful wines rather than simple bistro reds. The style is generous but grounded, with ripe fruit, mineral depth and a clear sense of place.

This wine is made from 100% Gamay Noir grown on the Côte du Py, Morgon’s celebrated volcanic hill of ancient blue stone. The vines average over 50 years old, giving naturally concentrated fruit and a more structured expression of Gamay. The estate works sustainably, with around 8 hectares in production for this cuvée.

The grapes are hand-picked, manually sorted and partially destemmed, usually around 50 to 70%. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks over 18 to 25 days, with regular pump-overs and punch-downs, giving a more Burgundian style of extraction than simple carbonic Beaujolais. After pressing, the wine is aged for around 10 months, roughly two thirds in concrete and one third in recent French oak barrels and foudres. The best tanks and barrels are then selected for the final blend.

Côte du Py is known for producing darker, more structured Morgon, and 2023 shows that clearly: ripe black fruit, graphite, spice, mineral grip and the freshness to age well.
