2021 Shiraz, 16 Stops

Riverland, Australia

Juicy, generous and immediately inviting, this South Australian Shiraz opens with dark plum, blackberry and bright red berries, layered with cracked black pepper, liquorice and warm spice. The palate is smooth and fruit-forward, with ripe berry flavours joined by a subtle earthy, savoury character.

Fresh acidity and silky tannins keep everything balanced, while restrained French oak adds gentle structure without obscuring the fruit. Full of flavour but never heavy, this is an easy-going, crowd-pleasing Shiraz with a satisfyingly long finish.

For when: The barbecue is lit, and you need a dependable red that everyone will enjoy.

Pairs with: Grilled sausages, cheeseburgers, barbecue ribs, lamb koftas, aubergine parmigiana or mature Cheddar.

The 2021 blends Shiraz from two contrasting South Australian regions. Most of the fruit comes from the sunny Riverland, bringing generous dark fruit and ripeness, while a smaller portion from maritime-influenced McLaren Vale contributes spice, freshness and greater depth.

6 Stops was created to offer expressive, regionally grounded South Australian wines at an approachable price. The wines are produced in McLaren Vale alongside Willunga 100, benefiting from the direction of winemaker Renae Hirsch and the same emphasis on freshness, balance and careful fruit selection.

The range draws upon vineyards in the Riverland and McLaren Vale. The Riverland’s long, sunny days encourage generous fruit and full ripeness, while cooler nights help preserve natural acidity. McLaren Vale’s coastal influence brings additional freshness, structure and spice.

The resulting wines are fruit-led and immediately enjoyable, with restrained winemaking allowing the character of the grapes to remain central. This Shiraz is a particularly good example, combining ripe South Australian fruit with peppery lift and soft, approachable tannins.

The 2021 Shiraz was made with 90% fruit from vineyards in the Riverland and 10% from McLaren Vale. The growing season was cooler than average, extending the ripening period and allowing the grapes to develop strong varietal character while retaining bright natural acidity.

Fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks with minimal cap management to extract colour, flavour and tannin gently. After seven days on the skins, the wine was pressed back to tank.

Most of the wine remained in stainless steel to preserve its vibrant fruit, while a small proportion matured in French oak hogsheads to add structure and complexity without introducing excessive oak flavour.

Alcohol: 14%.
