2020 Summus Toscana IGT, Banfi
Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
Summus, Latin for “highest.” is a wine of towering elegance and was the first Super Tuscan produced in Montalcino (1985)
A wine of presence and precision, the 2020 Summus radiates quiet power. Deep ruby in the glass, it unfolds with layers of blackberry, plum, and dark cherry wrapped in cocoa, tobacco, and sweet spice. The palate is beautifully composed, dense yet lifted with velvety tannins and a fine mineral thread that carries through to a long, resonant finish. Every sip feels sculpted, confident, and utterly seamless, balancing richness with the effortless grace of Banfi’s signature style.
For when: dinner turns into the best conversation of the week.
Pairs with: bistecca alla Fiorentina, roast lamb, or truffle risotto.
If this wine were a person, it’d be the architect, bold vision, flawless detail.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Sangiovese, Summus represents the pinnacle of Banfi’s research and craftsmanship in Montalcino. The fruit is hand-harvested from hillside vineyards within the estate’s mosaic of soils and elevations, expressing both structure and fragrance. Each variety is vinified separately, then aged for around 18 months in French oak before final blending. The result is an elegant synthesis of Tuscany’s warmth and international polish, a wine that celebrates Banfi’s mastery of both innovation and terroir.

Founded in 1978 by the vision of Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani, Banfi represents a marriage of winemaking passion and technological innovation. Through collaboration with Ezio Rivella, one of Italy’s most eminent winemakers, the land purchased in Montalcino was transformed into a crucible of quality and potential. The acquisition of the historic Piedmontese winery Bruzzone subsequently further enriched the portfolio, integrating the wine tradition of Piedmont into the Banfi world. Banfi has obtained the Equalitas certification both at the organisational and product levels. ‘We see a global and connected world, where differences are prosperity. The products of our land, to be defended and enhanced, are the best expression of human labour and ingenuity’. ‘Always pioneers, we value research and people, respecting the territories in which we work. For a better wine world.’ Cristina Mariani-May – third family generation and CEO of Banfi.
The fruit and structure of the Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon are enhanced by the elegance and bouquet of the Syrah. The 3 varieties are vinified separately. After alcoholic fermentation, the individual wines are transferred to French oak barriques and aged separately for 12-14 months. They are then blended and aged in wood for 10-12 months. Bottle aging follows for 6 months.
