2019 'Excelsus' IGT, Banfi
Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
Excelsus, Latin for “eminent,” is produced only in excellent vintages.
There’s something gloriously self-assured about this wine. Deep garnet in the glass, it opens with poised intensity, cassis, graphite, tobacco leaf and dark cherries drifting into mocha and cedar. The palate glides between plush power and precise structure, with ripe black fruit framed by polished tannins and a long, savoury finish that hums with balsamic herbs and spice. A wine of poise and pedigree, it feels at once modern and timeless, Tuscany seen through the lens of Bordeaux.
For when: the evening calls for candlelight and confidence.
Pairs with: Chianina steak, venison ragu, or a perfectly aged cheddar.
If this wine were a person, it’d arrive in a tailored jacket and leave with your admiration.
Born from Banfi’s pioneering spirit, Excelsus marries Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on select plots surrounding the medieval castle of Poggio alle Mura. The 2019 vintage, marked by warm days and cool nights, delivered grapes of remarkable concentration and balance. Aged for 18 months in French oak barriques, it’s a wine that bridges continents and philosophies, the precision of Bordeaux meeting the soul of Montalcino and one that continues to cement Banfi’s reputation as one of Tuscany’s great modern estates.

Founded in 1978 by the vision of Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani, Banfi represents a marriage of winemaking passion and technological innovation. Through collaboration with Ezio Rivella, one of Italy’s most eminent winemakers, the land purchased in Montalcino was transformed into a crucible of quality and potential. The acquisition of the historic Piedmontese winery Bruzzone subsequently further enriched the portfolio, integrating the wine tradition of Piedmont into the Banfi world. Banfi has obtained the Equalitas certification both at the organisational and product levels. ‘We see a global and connected world, where differences are prosperity. The products of our land, to be defended and enhanced, are the best expression of human labour and ingenuity’. ‘Always pioneers, we value research and people, respecting the territories in which we work. For a better wine world.’ Cristina Mariani-May – third family generation and CEO of Banfi.
The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are vinified separately with a maceration of between 8 and 18 days. Alcoholic fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation in barriques in temperature controlled areas. For the fi rst 12-14 months, the varieties age separately in French oak barriques. They are then blended and aged as a cuvée for an additional 8 to 10 months. Bottle-aging follows for at least 6 months. The wine is left unfi ltered to retain its subtle nuances of plum, black currant and cedar.
