2018 Château Lucas, Lussac-Saint-Émilion

Lussac Saint Emilion, Bordeaux, France

Château Lucas’ 2018 Lussac-Saint-Émilion is Right Bank Bordeaux in a generous, quietly mature phase. Merlot gives the wine its dark plum, black cherry and rounded fruit, while Cabernet Franc adds redcurrant, violet, dried herbs, tobacco leaf and a cool earthy lift. It feels classic rather than showy, with the warmth of the 2018 vintage now settling into a smooth, savoury register.

On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, supple and reassuringly claret-like, with ripe black fruit, gentle tannic grip and a fresh line through the finish. The fruit is still present, but bottle age has brought softer notes of leather, spice, forest floor and tea leaf. A very satisfying mature Bordeaux for drinking now, especially with proper food.

For when
A roast dinner needs honest Right Bank comfort with a little bottle age.

Roast lamb, beef stew, duck breast, mushroom pie, pork shoulder, hard cheeses, venison, shepherd’s pie or grilled sausages.

Château Lucas is a Lussac-Saint-Émilion estate with the calm, traditional appeal of Bordeaux’s satellite appellations: proper clay-limestone terroir, Merlot and Cabernet Franc at the centre, and wines built for the table rather than for theatre. The 2018 vintage gives this bottle extra depth and ripeness, while the estate’s straightforward, tank-led approach keeps the fruit honest, fresh and unforced.

Château Lucas is based in Lussac, one of the satellite appellations of Saint-Émilion, where clay-limestone soils and Right Bank grape varieties give wines with round fruit, freshness and approachable structure. The estate covers 21 hectares and is associated with Frédéric Vauthier, with vineyards planted equally to Merlot and Cabernet Franc, an unusually balanced split that gives the wine both softness and aromatic lift.

The average vine age is around 35 years, giving enough maturity for depth without losing the fresh, direct appeal that makes Lussac-Saint-Émilion such a strong-value Bordeaux choice. This is not a highly extracted, heavily oaked style. Château Lucas offers a more traditional and transparent expression, built around ripe fruit, gentle structure and the savoury character of the appellation. For customers looking for mature Right Bank Bordeaux without the price of Saint-Émilion itself, it is a confident, classic and very useful bottle.

Château Lucas comes from 21 hectares of vineyard on clay-limestone soils over Molasse du Fronsadais, a formation that helps Merlot build flesh while supporting Cabernet Franc’s freshness and perfume. The vineyard is planted to 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, with vines averaging around 35 years old.

Harvesting is mechanical, with vinification carried out in concrete and stainless steel tanks. Ageing takes place entirely in tank, preserving the wine’s fruit clarity and avoiding overt oak influence. That suits the style well, keeping the wine supple, direct and food-friendly.

The 2018 Bordeaux vintage began with significant mildew pressure after a wet spring, followed by a long, hot and dry summer that allowed red grapes to ripen fully. A fine late season meant Merlot and Cabernet Franc could be picked at good maturity, giving Right Bank wines with ripe fruit, generous texture and enough freshness to hold their shape.
