2023 Pu Primitivo, Salento, San Marzano

Salento, Puglia, Italy

Salento Glow

Juicy, sun-warmed and wonderfully easy-going, Pu opens with ripe plum, black cherry and blackberry, layered with rosemary, sweet spice and a gentle hint of vanilla. The palate is full and generous, with succulent dark fruit, soft tannins and a rounded texture that makes it immediately inviting. It’s bold without being heavy, ripe without losing balance, finishing smooth, warming and full of southern Italian charm.

For when: the pizza is arriving, the glasses are ready and nobody wants an overly serious bottle.

Pairs with: beef ragù, meatballs in tomato sauce, grilled sausages, barbecue, burgers, aubergine parmigiana or mature hard cheeses.

Pu is San Marzano’s direct, fruit-first expression of Primitivo from Salento. The vines grow around 100 metres above sea level in Puglia’s warm, dry climate, rooted in shallow clay soils scattered with rock. These conditions encourage generous ripeness while providing enough moisture retention to support the vines through the heat of summer. Made entirely without oak, the wine places juicy fruit and Primitivo’s naturally soft, rounded character firmly at the centre.

San Marzano was established in 1962 when 19 growers from the village of San Marzano di San Giuseppe combined their vineyards and experience to create a shared winery. From those modest beginnings, the cooperative has grown to include more than 1,200 growers and has become one of southern Italy’s most recognised wine producers.

The estate’s vineyards are spread across Puglia, where intense sunshine, warm temperatures and low rainfall provide excellent conditions for varieties such as Primitivo and Negroamaro. San Marzano’s technical team works closely with its growers, overseeing vineyard treatments and harvest decisions to ensure consistency across a large and varied collection of sites.

The winemaking combines modern precision with a clear understanding of Puglia’s traditional grapes. Under winemaker Caterina Bellanova, the range stretches from vibrant, fruit-led wines designed for early enjoyment to concentrated expressions from mature vines and carefully selected parcels. Pu belongs firmly to the former camp. It captures the generosity and warmth of Salento Primitivo in an accessible, polished style, with enough richness for hearty food but none of the excessive weight sometimes associated with the variety.

The 2023 Pu is made from 100% Primitivo grown in vineyards approximately 100 metres above sea level in Salento. The vines are espalier trained and planted in shallow, clay-rich soils interspersed with rock. This combination provides natural drainage while retaining sufficient moisture during Puglia’s hot, dry summers.

The grapes were harvested during the cool early morning in the first week of September. Maceration took place at a controlled temperature of 25°C for approximately 10 days, extracting ripe fruit, colour and fine tannins. Fermentation followed in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks using yeasts selected specifically for Primitivo, with stirring carried out twice daily.

The wine was made entirely without oak to preserve its vibrant fruit and approachable varietal character.

Alcohol: 13.5%. Residual sugar: 10g/L. Grape variety: 100% Primitivo. Closure: screwcap. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
