2023 'Tom's Block' Pinot Noir, Neudorf
Nelson, New Zealand
“Moutere Velvet”
This is Neudorf Pinot in full voice. The 2023 Tom’s Block opens with summer berries, dark cherry and raspberry, layered with warm spice, cocoa powder and a whisper of leather that gives it quiet depth. There is an unmistakable Moutere signature here, that earthy, clay-rich undertone that grounds the fruit and keeps everything beautifully composed.
On the palate, it is supple and seamless. Wild ferment and gentle hand plunging bring texture and detail, while ten months in French oak, just 20 % new, frames the fruit without taking centre stage. The tannins are fine and dusted in cocoa, giving structure without grip. It feels lush yet restrained, fragrant yet grounded, finishing long and velvety with spice and red fruit lingering softly.
For when you want Pinot Noir that balances comfort with sophistication.
Pairs with duck breast, mushroom risotto, roast lamb or anything with earthy depth.
If this wine were a fabric, it would be brushed velvet, rich, smooth and quietly luxurious.
Producer
Neudorf was founded in 1978 by Tim and Judy Finn, pioneers of the Nelson wine scene and early advocates of sustainable winegrowing in New Zealand. Today, their daughter Rosie works alongside winemaker Todd Stevens and viticulturalist Stef Brockley to continue the estate’s focus on organic farming and precision winemaking. Tom’s Block, purchased in 1999 and named after former neighbours Tom and Norma Francis, sits next to the Home Vineyard on north-facing Moutere clay gravels. Dry farmed and organically cultivated, this parcel consistently produces Pinot Noir of fragrance, finesse and unmistakable sense of place.
