2022 Moutere Pinot Noir 'Home Block', Neudorf
Nelson, New Zealand
“The Heart of Moutere”
This is the flagship. The wine that defines Neudorf Pinot Noir. The 2022 Home Block opens with a gentle yet deeply layered perfume of violet, vanilla pod and pink peppercorn, unfolding into pomegranate, blueberry and wild cherry. There is an unmistakable savoury undercurrent, earthy and brooding, that speaks of clay, history and Nelson restraint.
On the palate it is graceful rather than forceful. The fruit feels crunchy and autumnal, lifted by soft, natural acidity that keeps everything fresh and composed. Fine, cocoa-like tannins weave through the core, bringing elegance and purity rather than weight. Ten months in French oak, just 20 percent new, provides subtle framing, never dominance. The texture is silky yet structured, tapering into a long, savoury finish that lingers on spice, earth and cool red fruit.
This is Pinot Noir with quiet authority, refined, thoughtful and beautifully balanced.
For when you want a serious Pinot that still whispers rather than shouts.
Pairs with duck, venison, truffled dishes or slow evenings that deserve something contemplative.
If this wine were a season, it would be early autumn, golden light, fallen leaves and crisp air.
Producer
Neudorf was founded in 1978 by Tim and Judy Finn, pioneers of the Nelson wine industry and early advocates of sustainable winegrowing in New Zealand. The Home Block was purchased from descendants of the original German settlers and remains the spiritual centre of the estate, with original plantings dating back to 1978. Organically cultivated, dry farmed and entirely hand harvested, the vineyard sits on Moutere clay gravels that lend savoury depth and structure to the wines. Today, Rosie Finn, alongside winemaker Todd Stevens and viticulturalist Stef Brockley, continues the family’s commitment to sustainability, precision and wines that truly reflect their place.
