2024 Meursault Tête de Murger, Domaine Patrick Javillier

Meursault, Burgundy, France

Golden Tension

Fresh pear, crisp apple and lemon oil rise from the glass, layered with white blossom, fennel, baking spice and gently toasted hazelnut. Beneath the fruit lies a cool mineral character, with touches of struck stone and savoury lees giving the wine impressive depth and definition.

Generous yet beautifully controlled, the palate combines ripe orchard fruit and subtle creaminess with vibrant acidity and a fine saline thread. There is breadth through the middle, but also precision, energy and a chalky structure that keeps everything moving. Long, layered and quietly powerful, this is village Meursault with the depth and authority of a Premier Cru.

For when: Dinner deserves proper white Burgundy, but elegance matters more than extravagance.

Pairs with: Roast turbot, scallops, lobster, roast chicken with morels, veal in a cream sauce or mature Comté.

Tête de Murger brings together two contrasting Meursault vineyards. The 2024 blend comprises 70% Les Murgers de Monthélie, whose deeper clay soils contribute breadth and length, and 30% Les Casse-Têtes, an east-facing site with thin, stony soils that supplies mineral drive and freshness. Together, they form one of Patrick Javillier’s most complete and highly regarded cuvées

Domaine Patrick Javillier is a family-run estate based in Meursault, with approximately 11 hectares of vineyards spread across the Côte de Beaune. The domaine’s modern story began in 1945, when Raymond Javillier returned from the war and took responsibility for two hectares of family vines. His son Patrick joined the estate after gaining his national diploma in oenology and oversaw his first harvest in 1974.

Patrick gradually expanded the domaine through the 1980s and early 1990s, assembling an impressive collection of parcels in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses. Chardonnay remains the heart of the estate, although a small range of finely structured Pinot Noir is also produced.

The next generation now plays a central role. Patrick’s daughter Marion oversees the red wines and commercial side of the domaine, while Pierre-Emmanuel Lamy manages the vineyards and white-wine production. Their approach combines thoughtful, sustainable vineyard work with precise cellar practices, producing wines celebrated for their texture, mineral definition and ability to age.

The 2024 Tête de Murger is made entirely from Chardonnay and combines 70% fruit from Les Murgers de Monthélie with 30% from Les Casse-Têtes. The two parcels were harvested and vinified separately, allowing their contrasting characters to be preserved throughout fermentation and maturation.

The grapes were sorted in the vineyard before gentle pneumatic pressing. Following settling, the juice was transferred to oak barrels, where fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts and was followed by malolactic fermentation. The proportion of new oak is carefully judged according to the character of the vintage, while bâtonnage is used selectively to build texture without obscuring freshness or terroir.

Each parcel remained separate during an élevage of approximately 16 to 18 months before the final blend was assembled. The wine was bottled with minimal fining and filtration, preserving its depth, energy and fine mineral structure.

100% Chardonnay. Alcohol: 13%. Vineyard area: 0.62 hectares. Recommended ageing potential: 8 to 10 years. Serve at 11 to 13°C.
