Orange Wine
Orange wine is white wine made a little like red wine. Instead of pressing white grapes and separating the juice from the skins straight away, the grapes are left to ferment with their skins for a period of time. That skin contact gives the wine its golden, amber or copper colour, as well as extra texture, gentle tannin and deeper flavours. Think dried apricot, citrus peel, orchard fruit, spice, tea, herbs and sometimes a savoury, nutty edge.
The result is one of the most characterful and food-friendly styles in the wine world. Orange wines can be fresh and lightly grippy, or bold, structured and deeply complex, depending on the grape, region and length of skin contact. They are brilliant with dishes that usually sit between white and red wine: spiced vegetables, roast chicken, pork, hard cheeses, mezze, Georgian food, Moroccan tagines and anything with a little smoke, spice or texture.
