2023 Langhe Nebbiolo Cascina Sciulun, Franco Conterno

Langhe, Piedmont, Italy

The Baby Barolo with a Big Heart”

The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo opens with that unmistakable lift of rose petals, sour cherry and a whisper of anise, pure, bright and beautifully transparent. On the palate it’s all crunchy red fruit, wild strawberry and pomegranate, threaded with fine chalky tannins and that classic Langhe snap of acidity. Elegance is the headline here: silky texture, subtle spice and a long, gently mineral finish that reminds you why Nebbiolo, even in its youth can feel so profound.

For when: you want Barolo energy without the wait or price tag.
Pairs with: truffle pasta, roast duck, or a pile of parmigiano shards.
If this wine were a mood it would be that golden late-afternoon moment when Piedmont turns soft and pink.

Cascina Sciulun is part of the Franco Conterno estate, a family with deep roots in the heart of Barolo, farming organically and championing the kind of purity Nebbiolo thrives on. Their Langhe bottling comes from younger vines in Monforte d’Alba, still serious terroir, crafted with a gentle touch to let the grape’s aromatic clarity shine. It’s a wine that wears its heritage lightly yet proudly, offering a glimpse of Barolo’s soul in a more immediate, utterly drinkable form.

Franco Conterno is a classic Monforte d’Alba estate built on generations of family stewardship, where tradition, organic farming and a deep respect for Nebbiolo guide every decision. Today the winery is led by brothers Daniele and Andrea Conterno, who continue the work begun by their grandfather, tending vineyards across some of Monforte’s most expressive slopes. Here, the combination of altitude, thin limestone-rich soils and dramatic day–night temperature shifts naturally produces wines with lifted aromatics, tension and finely etched structure.

In the cellar, the approach is calm, deliberate and resolutely traditional. Fermentations are handled with gentle extractions, and maturation takes place in large Slavonian oak botti, allowing purity and place to shine over oak influence. While the estate is celebrated for its Barolo from sites such as Bussia, its wider range—including Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto—shows the same precision, charm and authenticity. Franco Conterno remains one of Piemonte’s quietly reliable addresses: an estate defined not by spectacle but by craftsmanship, continuity and wines that speak with honest, unmistakable Monforte character.
