2019 Barbaresco Asili, Bruno Giacosa
Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy
Bruno Giacosa is considered to be one of Piedmont’s most highly regarded producers, their wines are some of the most highly sought after in the world.
The great man passed away in 2018 but since 2011 winemaking has been overseen by his protegé Dante Scaglione, together with his daughter Bruna Giacosa.
Asili represents one of the most important and celebrated single vineyards of Barbaresco – a magical combination of muscle and refinement. Bruno Giacosa purchased vineyards in Asili in the 1980s, which now total 2.5 hectares.
This 2019 is a seriously exciting vintage. Boasting noteworthy power and persuasive elegance, the 2019 has pure, crystalline palate with a silky but firm body. Notes of raspberry and wild strawberry with floral tones are found on the nose. On the palate, good structure is matched with freshness of fruit and fine tannins. Drink 2024-2034.

Notable Awards
98 points. “Sweet and succulent aromas of tangerines, freshly cut ripe strawberries, cherries and flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate with sleek and dense tannins that run the length of the wine and then fan out into a dense, vivid finish of fruit. It’s chewy and seriously structured with finesse and energy. Silky texture. ” James Suckling.com, April 2022

Known as the “Genius of Neive”, Bruno Giacosa’s mastery of Nebbiolo was widely recognised amongst wine lovers. His single-vineyards Barolo and Barbaresco set new standards for the whole regions, allowing a unique blend of traditional and cutting-edge methods.
Bruno Giacosa sadly passed away in January 2018, but having suffered a stroke in 2006 it is his daughter Bruna, who has been driving this great wine estate forward in recent years, supported by her sister Marina. And, having worked at Neive for 16 years until 2008, oenologist Dante Scaglione returned in 2011 as a consultant
The family name was first established in the Langhe in 1871 by Bruno’s grandfather Carlo Giacosa – as a commerciante di vini, building a network of excellent local growers and vinifying their grapes at the winery in Neive, near Alba. After World War II, the 15-year-old Bruno joined his father Mario in the family business. By the time the winery was under the control of the third generation, Giacosa was established as one of the three most important labels in Barbaresco. However, at the same time as he was learning his trade, Bruno was also honing his philosophy of winemaking, based on a passionate pursuit of perfection and the belief that wine should be an expression of location and terroir.
Today the Giacosa family philosophy is a simple one, based on the respect of local tradition in the vineyard and the cellar, and a driving passion for perfection that is handed down from generation to generation. Bruna like her father believes that the wines should do the talking.
