2016 Estate Shiraz, Paringa Estate

Mornington Peninsula, Australia

In 2007 James Halliday awarded Paringa the title of ‘Best Winery in Australia’, not a bad effort for former school teacher Lindsay McCall who heads up the operation. McCall was one of the early pioneers in Mornington, who boldly experimented with different styles and possibilities in the region and quickly earned himself an impressive reputation, despite his humble beginnings as a teacher. He was the first to recognise the potential of the Mornington Peninsula for Australia’s favourite grape – Shiraz, and thank God he did. The result is the exact wine we have today, a spicy, dark, cool-climate Shiraz. Elegant and refined, a testament to the efforts of an exceptionally gifted winemaker.

In the glass, aromas of black pepper, blackberry and plum waft invitingly and lead the way into a flavoursome palate, which is savoury and textured. Fine-grained tannins give outstanding structure, balance and palate length. This is an excellent Paringa Shiraz that can be enjoyed young with food but will also cellar well for the next 20 years.

93 POINTS, JANE FAULKNER – HALLIDAY’S WINE COMPANION “Awash with flavour from black pepper, spice to dark fruits and a touch of Aussie bush gum leaves. While there’s some grip to the tannins, they are fleshy too; fuller-bodied, concentrated, a slightly drying finish but overall, good drinking now and will last some distance.”

Located in the heart of Victoria’s beautiful Mornington Peninsula, Paringa Estate was founded in 1984 by Lindsay McCall when he purchased a derelict orchard. Lindsay’s passion and fascination with wine began in the mid 1970s and by the mid 1980s he decided to follow his dream by establishing Paringa Estate. The first vintage was in 1988 with just three tonnes of fruit and over the years it has grown considerably, with production now at 16,000 cases. Paringa Estate is one of the most highly awarded boutique wineries in Australia, regularly winning trophies for its Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The collection includes a stunning and precise Pinot Gris, as Lindsay says anywhere capable of growing great Pinot Noir should be capable of growing great Pinot Gris. The wines pay homage to Burgundy in style and James Halliday says Paringa Estate is “one of the best, if not the best, wineries on the Peninsula”.

From the winemaker: 2016 was our earliest vintage on record for Shiraz. A warm spring and summer allowed the fruit to ripen by the end of March, which is when we picked. In the early vintages at Paringa, Shiraz would ripen much later, often towards the end of May. The wine has been aged for 18 months in new (28%) and seasoned French oak barriques.
