2021 Protea Merlot, Anthonij Rupert Wyne
Western Cape, South Africa
Velvet Plum
Warm, generous and instantly appealing, this is Merlot with plenty of ripe charm and just enough polish to keep it feeling well turned out. Blackberries, plum and mulberry rise from the glass first, joined by a touch of dark chocolate, gentle spice and that soft fruitcake note that gives the wine extra warmth and character. The palate is smooth and rounded, with juicy red and black fruit, a supple texture and a softly supportive frame that keeps everything in balance. Easy-going, yes, but never flimsy, this is a red that feels plush, friendly and very easy to enjoy. The 2021 is 100% Merlot from the Western Cape, grown on decomposed granite with clay subsoils, with the season marked by cooler, moderate conditions and replenished water reserves.
For when: supper is relaxed, the food is hearty, and the bottle needs broad appeal.
Pairs with: grilled pork, beef burgers, tomato-based pasta, or mushroom dishes with a little spice.
If this wine were a place: a warm Cape evening with the last light on the hills and something comforting on the table.
The Protea range sits within the Anthonij Rupert portfolio and is designed to offer a more open, approachable expression of the Western Cape. For the 2021 Merlot, the fruit was hand-harvested from Western Cape vineyards and vinified in a style aimed at preserving softness, fruit and easy charm. Across the range, Protea wines are also notable for their sustainability credentials, with lightweight bottles and labels printed on 100% recycled material.
