2024 Pet Nat, Saint Clair

Marlborough, New Zealand

Bright, breezy and full of natural sparkle, the 2024 Saint Clair Pét Nat is Marlborough in its most playful mood. Made from 67% Pinot Gris, 18% Grüner Veltliner and 15% Riesling, it opens with fresh green apple, white peach and citrus zest, lifted by a gentle floral note and a subtle leesy softness. The bubbles are delicate rather than showy, giving the wine a light, refreshing fizz that feels crisp, dry and effortlessly drinkable. There is texture here too, with the Grüner adding a little peppery shape and the Riesling bringing that mouthwatering line of acidity through the finish.

For when: the sun is out, snacks are open, and nobody wants anything too serious.
Pairs with: seafood platters, salty crisps, goat’s cheese, sushi, or fresh summer salads.

Saint Clair is one of Marlborough’s most respected family estates, best known for expressive, fruit-driven wines that capture the brightness and clarity of New Zealand’s most famous wine region. This Pét Nat shows a more relaxed, adventurous side of the winery, using the ancestral method, where fermentation finishes in bottle under crown cap, creating a lightly sparkling, gently cloudy wine with natural energy and charm. Fresh, fun and quietly clever, it is exactly the kind of bottle that makes natural sparkling wine feel easy to love.

Neal and Judy Ibbotson were pioneers in the Marlborough wine industry, first planting vineyards in the valley in 1978 and then establishing Saint Clair Family Estate in 1994. They own 160 hectares of vineyard in 10 different Marlborough locations chosen specifically for the attributes of their individual "terroir" and ability to produce top quality grapes. Neal Ibbotson combines his extensive expertise in viticulture with the talent of one of New Zealand's leading winemaking teams. The vines are sustainably cultivated and the estate holds the Sustainable Wines of New Zealand certification. Since 1994, when wines from the first vintage all won medals including gold, the name Saint Clair has been synonymous with quality and its award-winning record continues today. This is a sentiment shared by Bob Campbell MW, who says “Saint Clair now makes the country’s and perhaps the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc”.

This Pétillant Naturel wine was produced using minimal intervention. The lightly pressed juice from the three varietals was blended prior to starting a slow and clean fermentation process. Fermentation was partially arrested at an ideal balance of remaining sugar and alcohol, before being racked straight into bottles, capped, and placed into a cool room to continue fermentation through to dryness. Completing this process under crown cap captured the effervescence created during this final fermentation, resulting in a lightly sparkling and unfiltered wine that may have a cloudy appearance and a sediment. Due to the nature of this winemaking style, slight variances amongst bottles are to be expected.
