2024 Hey Malbec, Matias Riccitelli

Mendoza, Argentina

Serious Juice

Do not be fooled by the label; this is no throwaway crowd-pleaser. Hey Malbec is bright, stylish and gloriously drinkable, but underneath the fun there is real class. Wild dark fruits, blackberry and black plum lead the way, followed by violet, black pepper and a gentle note of vanilla and dark chocolate that gives the wine an extra layer of polish. The palate is rich and juicy, with soft ripe tannins and plenty of dark-fruited depth, yet it never feels heavy. Instead, there is a lovely freshness running through it, giving the wine lift, shape and a long, opulent finish.

For when: burgers are sizzling, the music is on, and the bottle needs personality as well as substance.
Pairs with: steak, smoky barbecue, empanadas, or anything with char and spice.
If this wine were a place: a rooftop in Mendoza at dusk, with warm air, city lights and the Andes watching in the distance.

Matias Riccitelli has become one of Argentina’s most exciting modern winemakers, known for wines that combine energy, site expression and a slightly rebellious sense of style. Hey Malbec brings together fruit from old vines in Perdriel and high-altitude vineyards in Gualtallary, giving the wine both generosity and freshness. Those older vines, some over 80 years old, combined with the cool nights and long ripening season of Mendoza, help give this Malbec its lovely intensity, aromatic complexity and sense of quiet seriousness beneath the playful label.

Matias Riccitelli is the son of renowned winemaker Jorge Riccitelli. Having worked at some of the most prestigious wineries in Argentina and several vintages around the world, Matias used his experience, knowledge and passion and set up his own winery in 2009. His vineyards cover 50 hectares located in three selected sites within the premium growing region of Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza. This is a young and dynamic project in which Matias is seeking to express the full potential of Argentine terroir.

The grapes were carefully sorted, then vinified in small concrete tanks. 80% of the fruit was traditionally fermented at controlled temperatures of 25 to 27°C, with three daily pump overs, followed by a maceration period of 25 days. 20% of the remaining fruit was vinified as whole clusters, obtaining a carbonic maceration. Made without oak influence, to retain the purity of fruit.
