Jim Barry

Certain names define Australian wine history, and Jim Barry is firmly among them. The first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley, graduating from Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947, Jim Barry played a pivotal role in shaping the region into a benchmark for world-class Riesling and fine, structured reds. After more than two decades pioneering Australian table wine at the Clarevale Co-operative and helping establish Taylors Wines in 1969, he laid the foundations for a family estate that remains proudly owned and run by three generations of Roseworthy graduates. Today, under Peter and Sue Barry, with Tom as winemaker, the Barry name remains inseparable from the Clare Valley and its identity.

At the heart of the estate are two truly iconic vineyards. Florita Vineyard, acquired in 1986, is one of Clare’s grand Riesling sites, delivering wines of piercing lime intensity, mineral tension and extraordinary ageing potential. The Armagh Vineyard, planted in 1968 on a north-facing slope, produces one of Australia’s most celebrated Shiraz bottlings, powerful yet precise, deeply concentrated yet remarkably poised, and capable of evolving for decades. Together, Florita and The Armagh represent the twin pillars of Jim Barry Wines, benchmark expressions of Clare Valley terroir and enduring symbols of Australian fine wine.
