2024 Dolcetto d'Alba, Roagna

Piedmont, Italy

One of the most serious Dolcettos in Piedmont

Dolcetto with pedigree. From the legendary Roagna estate, this is a beautifully pure expression of the grape, bursting with black cherry, wild blackberry and crushed violets. The palate is juicy and vibrant, with dark berry fruit wrapped in gentle tannins and a flicker of almond and spice. There’s freshness and lift throughout, finishing dry, savoury and quietly complex.

For when: pasta night needs the right bottle.
Pairs with: tomato-rich ragù, pizza, or charcuterie.
If this wine were a place: a hillside trattoria in the Langhe at dusk.

Roagna is best known for its iconic Barbaresco and Barolo, but the estate approaches Dolcetto with the same meticulous care in the vineyard and cellar. Sourced from old vines across the Langhe hills and fermented with native yeasts, the wine is made with minimal intervention to preserve purity and freshness. The result is Dolcetto that feels both traditional and refined, vibrant fruit, subtle structure and unmistakable Piedmontese character.

Roagna is one of Piedmont’s most revered traditional estates, with a history in Barbaresco stretching back to the mid-19th century. The modern estate began to take shape in the late 1800s when the Roagna family started bottling their own wines in the village of Barbaresco, helping establish the identity of Barbaresco as a great Nebbiolo wine alongside Barolo.

Today the winery is run by Luca Roagna, the fifth generation of the family, who continues the estate’s uncompromising commitment to traditional winemaking. The family farms around 15 hectares of historic vineyards across Barbaresco and Barolo, including prized crus such as Pajé, Asili, Montefico and the monopole Pira in Castiglione Falletto. These sites produce some of the most precise and age-worthy Nebbiolo in Piedmont.

Roagna’s philosophy is deeply rooted in tradition. The vineyards are farmed organically with minimal intervention, and the wines undergo extremely long macerations, sometimes up to 90 days, followed by extended ageing in large neutral oak casks. The result is wines of extraordinary depth, purity and longevity, combining powerful structure with remarkable aromatic finesse. Today Roagna sits firmly among the elite producers of Piedmont, crafting wines that are both profoundly classical and unmistakably expressive of their historic Langhe terroir.

This wine is made from vines that are over fifty years old, according to a very traditional vinification process that can include up to 100 days of submerged cap maceration. The wine then ages for a year in wood and concrete vats.
