2020 Langhe Rosso, Roagna

Piedmont, Italy

The Insider’s Nebbiolo

This is Nebbiolo seen through the Roagna lens, pure, precise and quietly compelling. The nose opens with wild strawberry, red cherry and dried rose, layered with hints of orange peel, crushed herbs and delicate spice. On the palate, it’s vibrant and beautifully structured, bright red fruit carried by fine tannins and lively acidity. Subtle notes of tea leaf, citrus zest and earth add depth, leading to a long, mineral finish that feels both elegant and energetic.

For when: you want the soul of Barolo without the ceremony.
Pairs with: tajarin with ragĂą, roast chicken, or mushroom risotto.
If this wine were a place: a quiet Langhe hillside at sunset.

Roagna’s Langhe Rosso is crafted from young Nebbiolo vines in the estate’s legendary Barbaresco and Barolo vineyards, including Pajé and Pira.
Despite being the “entry” wine of the estate, it is made with the same meticulous care as their crus: native-yeast fermentation, long maceration, and extended ageing in large, neutral oak and cement before release.

The result is a wine that captures the unmistakable perfume, finesse and mineral energy of Nebbiolo, offering a fascinating glimpse into one of Piedmont’s most revered producers.

Roagna is one of Piedmont’s most revered traditional estates, with a history in Barbaresco stretching back to the mid-19th century. The modern estate began to take shape in the late 1800s when the Roagna family started bottling their own wines in the village of Barbaresco, helping establish the identity of Barbaresco as a great Nebbiolo wine alongside Barolo.

Today the winery is run by Luca Roagna, the fifth generation of the family, who continues the estate’s uncompromising commitment to traditional winemaking. The family farms around 15 hectares of historic vineyards across Barbaresco and Barolo, including prized crus such as Pajé, Asili, Montefico and the monopole Pira in Castiglione Falletto. These sites produce some of the most precise and age-worthy Nebbiolo in Piedmont.

Roagna’s philosophy is deeply rooted in tradition. The vineyards are farmed organically with minimal intervention, and the wines undergo extremely long macerations, sometimes up to 90 days, followed by extended ageing in large neutral oak casks. The result is wines of extraordinary depth, purity and longevity, combining powerful structure with remarkable aromatic finesse. Today Roagna sits firmly among the elite producers of Piedmont, crafting wines that are both profoundly classical and unmistakably expressive of their historic Langhe terroir.

Young vines, up to 20-25 years old, are used for this wine. The vines are exclusively of massal origin, with wood obtained during the pruning of the same vineyard.
Fermentation takes place exclusively in wooden vats using a pied de cuve made from indigenous yeasts. It lasts about ten days. The ancient, submerged cap maceration technique is then applied, lasting at least two months. The wine ages in a neutral oak barrel and concrete tanks for about five years.
