2020 Barolo La Pira, Roagna

Piedmont, Italy

The Monopole Barolo

2020 Pira is one of the standout traditional Barolos of the vintage 2020

From one of the most revered vineyards in Castiglione Falletto, this is Nebbiolo at its most classical and profound. The nose is intensely aromatic, unfolding with wild strawberry, red cherry and dried rose, layered with orange peel, anise, tar and delicate spice. On the palate, it is structured yet beautifully refined, bright red fruit wrapped in finely etched tannins and vibrant acidity. Notes of cranberry, rosehip, menthol and mineral nuance add depth, carrying through to an extraordinarily long and harmonious finish.

For when: Barolo deserves your full attention.
Pairs with: braised beef, truffle risotto or aged Parmigiano.
If this wine were a place: a misty morning in the hills of Castiglione Falletto.

The Pira vineyard is Roagna’s Barolo jewel. The family purchased this historic site in 1989, securing a monopole holding of about seven hectares below the Rocche di Castiglione. The vineyard’s complex soils of limestone, marl and iron-rich sediments give the wines their signature combination of power and finesse. Some vines here date back to 1937, contributing remarkable depth and longevity to the wine.

Roagna vinifies the wine with native yeasts, extremely long macerations and ageing in large neutral oak, allowing the vineyard character to speak with clarity. The result is Barolo that balances muscular structure with lifted aromatics and extraordinary ageing potential.

Roagna is one of Piedmont’s most revered traditional estates, with a history in Barbaresco stretching back to the mid-19th century. The modern estate began to take shape in the late 1800s when the Roagna family started bottling their own wines in the village of Barbaresco, helping establish the identity of Barbaresco as a great Nebbiolo wine alongside Barolo.

Today the winery is run by Luca Roagna, the fifth generation of the family, who continues the estate’s uncompromising commitment to traditional winemaking. The family farms around 15 hectares of historic vineyards across Barbaresco and Barolo, including prized crus such as Pajé, Asili, Montefico and the monopole Pira in Castiglione Falletto. These sites produce some of the most precise and age-worthy Nebbiolo in Piedmont.

Roagna’s philosophy is deeply rooted in tradition. The vineyards are farmed organically with minimal intervention, and the wines undergo extremely long macerations, sometimes up to 90 days, followed by extended ageing in large neutral oak casks. The result is wines of extraordinary depth, purity and longevity, combining powerful structure with remarkable aromatic finesse. Today Roagna sits firmly among the elite producers of Piedmont, crafting wines that are both profoundly classical and unmistakably expressive of their historic Langhe terroir.

Pira is a historic vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, the village closest to the centre of the Barolo production zone. It is the perfect habitat for our concept of viticulture, respectful of the life of the soils. The plot is protected uphill by the Rocche di Castiglione Falletto and downhill by a small forest.
The vines used to make this wine are over 25 years old. The vines are exclusively of massal origin, with wood obtained during the pruning of the old vines in this vineyard.
