2016 Rubicon, Inglenook

Founded in 1879, Inglenook is one of Napa Valley’s most historic and revered estates. Under the visionary stewardship of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola since 1975, the estate has been meticulously restored to its former glory, with a focus on producing world-class, organically farmed wines from its Rutherford vineyards. At the heart of this revival stands Rubicon, Inglenook’s flagship wine since its inaugural vintage in 1978. Conceived as a grand vin in the Bordeaux tradition, Rubicon is a deeply personal project for Coppola, an expression of both legacy and innovation, crafted under the direction of Philippe Bascaules (formerly of Château Margaux). Named after the fateful river crossed by Julius Caesar, Rubicon symbolises a bold commitment to excellence and a reverence for history.

The 2016 Rubicon epitomises the elegance and structure that define Rutherford’s most iconic wines. Produced under ideal growing conditions, this vintage showcases remarkable complexity, balance, and finesse. The nose opens with layered aromas of ripe black cherry, crème de cassis, and dark plum, accented by nuances of black liquorice, sweet vanilla, and a hint of smoky cedar. On the palate, Rubicon is broad and deeply expressive, with velvety tannins that frame its core of ripe black fruit. There is a seamless integration of richness and restraint, leading to a long, harmonious finish marked by subtle notes of spice and graphite.
