2023 Chiroubles La Scandaleuse, Domaine Metrat
Chiroubles, Beaujolais, France
“The Charming Rebel”
Pale ruby and perfumed, this is Beaujolais that dances between elegance and energy. The nose offers wild strawberry, raspberry and rose petal, layered with a hint of cola and spice - the signature of Bernard Métrat’s granite slopes. The palate is silky and vibrant, with red-berry fruit, soft minerality and a gentle lift of acidity that carries through to a clean, savoury finish. Joyful, expressive and a little bit cheeky, the perfect wine for easy evenings and good company.
For when: the grill’s hot and the playlist’s French.
Pairs with: charcuterie, roast chicken or grilled salmon.
If this wine were a song, it’d be catchy, bright, and impossible not to hum.
High in the granite hills of Chiroubles, Domaine Bernard Métrat crafts wines that capture the purity and perfume of Gamay at its best. Métrat farms old vines sustainably, working by hand and favouring a light touch in the cellar to preserve fruit and finesse. La Scandaleuse is his calling card - elegant yet playful, a Beaujolais that marries floral lift, silky texture and mineral precision. The 2023 vintage shines with freshness and balance, proving that even rebels can have impeccable manners.

Owned and run by Bernard Metrat and his father-in-law Michel Chevalier, Domaine Bernard Metrat is a small, traditional domaine of roughly 10 hectares of vines with small parcels spread across several communes in Beaujolais. Most of the vines are located in Fleurie’s renowned “La Roilette” lieu-dit- where the red granite soils, interspersed with layers of clay produce wines that are both mineral and full of charm. At an elevation of between 280 and 300 metres above sea level, east facing and aged sixty years, these perfectly situated vines produce Fleurie with a complex bouquet of violets and succulent red berry fruit with a hint of black pepper, a characteristic of the vineyard. Bernard is a member of Terra Vitis, a renowned environmental certification whose members adhere to environmentally friendly production methods with the focus on sustainable development. As such, the vines are hand harvested with the emphasis on organics from pruning to picking, treating or intervening only wherever necessary. The wines are fermented in the traditional way, using whole-bunches-without carbonic maceration, and ageing takes place in used wooden barrels and larger foudres for 6-9 months.
Hand harvest, natural yeast ferment of whole bunches in large concrete with ageing in concrete and stainless steel tanks for up to 85% of the wines with up to 15% aged in barrels of 3-10 years age for the top cuvees.
