2019 Mondot by Troplong Mondot, Saint Emilion Grand Cru

Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

The Little Brother with Big Ambitions.

A stunning introduction to the Troplong Mondot style, the 2019 Mondot delivers Saint-Émilion’s signature plush fruit with a modern, polished touch. The nose opens with ripe black cherry, plum and violets, laced with subtle mocha and graphite. The palate is generous yet composed, velvety Merlot fruit layered over fine, chalk-textured tannins, lifted by a fresh mineral edge from the limestone plateau. Juicy, supple and beautifully balanced, it shows real depth and pedigree for a second wine, finishing long, pure and quietly luxurious.

For when: you want Grand Cru character without the ceremony.
Pairs with: duck breast, wild mushroom risotto, or roast beef with thyme.
If this wine were a mood, it’d be smart-casual at its finest, relaxed, confident, impeccably tailored.

Château Troplong Mondot is one of Saint-Émilion’s most prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classé estates, perched high on the limestone plateau overlooking the village. Its vineyards, cultivated since the 18th century, are among the appellation’s highest and most prized, producing wines of richness, texture and unmistakable terroir character. Under the direction of Aymeric de Gironde, the estate has embraced a more refined, terroir-driven style, combining precision viticulture with gravity-flow winemaking and organic principles.

Mondot is the château’s second label, crafted predominantly from Merlot growing on the upper slopes and younger vines, with a touch of Cabernet Franc for lift and spice. The 2019 vintage, warm, ripe and beautifully balanced, showcases Troplong Mondot’s finesse in a more approachable form: a wine that mirrors the estate’s elegance, but invites you to enjoy it sooner rather than later.

Rising proudly above the village of Saint-Émilion, Château Troplong Mondot is one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive and acclaimed estates, a Premier Grand Cru Classé B that combines grandeur, precision, and an unmistakable sense of place. Its 43-hectare vineyard crowns the appellation’s limestone plateau, the highest point in Saint-Émilion, where clay-limestone soils and ideal south-facing exposure give the wines both depth and tension.

Founded in the late 18th century and refined through generations, the estate achieved greatness under Christine Valette, whose devotion to low yields and meticulous viticulture redefined the style of Saint-Émilion in the 1990s and 2000s. Since 2017, Aymeric de Gironde (formerly of Château Cos d’Estournel) has led a new era at Troplong Mondot, introducing organic farming, precision mapping of parcels, and a gentler, terroir-driven approach in both vineyard and cellar.

The wines of Troplong Mondot are known for their signature combination of richness and refinement, opulent Merlot fruit anchored by mineral freshness from the plateau’s limestone core. The second wine, Mondot, distils that same character into a more supple, accessible form, showcasing the estate’s hallmark balance and energy. Together, they embody the château’s philosophy: expressive, detailed, and deeply rooted in the contours of Saint-Émilion’s most privileged slope.
