2015 Balthasar Shiraz, Grant Burge
Eden Valley, Australia
The Eden Valley Velvet Storm
This is Eden Valley Shiraz with Barossa depth and cooler-climate poise: dark, generous, polished and just beginning to show its mature charm. It opens with plum, raspberry, blackberry and black cherry, then moves into fresh mint, sage, coffee, sweet baking spice, leather, dried meat and a little wood smoke. There is richness here, but it is carried with lift and shape rather than sheer weight.
The palate is full-bodied, silky and deeply fruited, with spice, plum and raspberry wrapped in elegant, fine tannins. Time has softened the wine beautifully, bringing out savoury notes of mushroom broth, dried herbs, cocoa and old oak, while the freshness keeps it lively. It feels broad and generous, but still distinctly Eden Valley: fragrant, structured and quietly refined.
For when you want Shiraz with richness, polish and a little mountain air.
Pairs with duck confit, roast pork, venison, lamb shoulder, beef cheek, mushroom pie, or hard-aged cheeses.
If this wine were… a coat, it would be dark velvet lined with spice and worn on a cold Barossa evening.
Grant Burge Wines is one of the Barossa’s great names, built on five generations of Burge family growers and a story rooted in the region since the 1800s. The Grant Burge describes Balthasar as one of its Wines of Distinction, sourced from Eden Valley, the cooler, higher-altitude side of the Barossa, where Shiraz gains elegance and varietal definition.
