2010 The Contours Riesling Museum Reserve, Pewsey Vale
Eden Valley, Australia
Pewsey Vale Vineyard The Contours is characterised by a special site, sensitive vine growing and astute winemaking. The Contours Riesling is produced from old vines grown on the coolest slope within this ruggedly beautiful single vineyard. After 13 years in the bottle, the 2007 Pewsey Vale Contours Riesling is showing all the poise and intensity that you would expect in a great bottle-aged Riesling.
Still pale straw with green hues. Intense classic fruit aromas of limes and lemons with fresh toast overlie the intense lime and citrus fruit. Citrus dominant, lime juice, hints of sage oil and marmalade, finishing with a crushed stone minerality. The wine is still vibrant and fresh, yet with richness and intensity from its 15 years in the bottle.

The 2010 The Contours Museum Reserve Riesling shows lovely, evolving lanolin and petrol notes, with beeswax and toast over a core of lemon curd, lemongrass and lime leaves. There is some honey, as well. This is a dry, light and expressive Riesling with tons of layers of flavor, as well as a long finish.

The Pewsey Vale Vineyard was established at Eden Valley in 1847 producing some of Australia’s first cool-climate wines. The early Pewsey Vale Vineyard Rieslings were exported to England where they won numerous awards in the prestigious wine shows of the era. Today Pewsey Vale Vineyard is a highly esteemed, specialist, single-site estate vineyard with provenance. Riesling is the single focus. The wines are made by Louisa Rose, widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest winemakers.
Pewsey Vale is one of the great Riesling vineyards of the world. Elevated above the Barossa Valley on undulating land, Eden Valley is situated between 450 and 500 metres above sea level. At this altitude, the cooler temperatures and greater diurnal range allow the grapes to retain their natural acidity, with aromatics and fine flavours slowly developing well into the cool, dry autumn. The soils through Eden Valley are generally shallow, rocky and acidic, in many areas suited only to the grazing of sheep and cattle. There are special pockets with slightly deeper soils and finer rocks, where the vineyards have been planted.
