2023 Noble Riesling 'Godfrey's Creek Reserve', Saint Clair, 375ml

Marlborough, New Zealand

Liquid sunlight in a glass, the 2023 Godfrey’s Creek Reserve is Saint Clair at its most enchanting. Glowing pale gold, it opens with heady aromas of honeycomb, apricot, and sun-dried fig, laced with a hint of ginger and candied citrus peel. The palate is luscious and opulent yet beautifully poised, waves of papaya, marmalade, and spiced quince unfolding over a seam of vibrant acidity. Sweetness and freshness entwine in perfect harmony, carrying through to a long, elegant finish that lingers like a golden memory.

For when: dessert deserves a standing ovation.
Pairs with: Roquefort, tarte tatin, or simply the final conversation of the evening.

Grown in Marlborough’s Wairau Valley, Godfrey’s Creek enjoys the misty mornings and sunny afternoons that make noble rot flourish. Select Riesling bunches were left to hang late into the season, concentrating sugars and flavour as botrytis worked its magic. Hand-harvested and gently pressed, the wine was cool-fermented and aged in stainless steel to preserve purity. Produced only in rare vintages, this 2023 release captures that fleeting balance between richness and radiance, proof that patience, in both vineyard and glass, is always rewarded.  Will age gracefully for 10+ years.

Neal and Judy Ibbotson were pioneers in the Marlborough wine industry, first planting vineyards in the valley in 1978 and then establishing Saint Clair Family Estate in 1994. They own 160 hectares of vineyard in 10 different Marlborough locations chosen specifically for the attributes of their individual “terroir” and ability to produce top-quality grapes. Neal Ibbotson combines his extensive expertise in viticulture with the talent of one of New Zealand’s leading winemaking teams led by Hamish Clark. Since 1994, when wines from the first vintage all won medals including gold, the name Saint Clair has been synonymous with quality and its award-winning record continues today. This is a sentiment shared by Bob Campbell MW, who says “Saint Clair now makes the country’s and perhaps the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc”.

The grapes were whole-bunch pressed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with a specially selected yeast strain. Fermentation was arrested at the point where the residual sugar was in perfect balance with the natural acidity. The wine was aged in stainless steel to retain the purity of fruit.
