2021 Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos, Chateau Dereszla, 375ml
Tokaj, Hungary
A shimmering honey-amber in the glass, the 2021 Aszú immediately wraps the senses in warmth and sparkle. The nose is a delicate mosaic of slow-roasted apricot, candied orange peel, mead and wild honey, lifted by delicate notes of saffron, beeswax and a whisper of jasmine. Beneath these sweeter aromas lies a subtle thread of minerality, wet stone and white pepper, giving the wine a refined lift beyond mere sweetness.
On the palate the wine unfolds with a rare balance of generosity and freshness. Rich flavours of preserved apricot, quince, and poached pear swirl with golden raisin and glycerine-smooth honey, while a vivid seam of bright acidity threads through, keeping the richness poised and elegant. Layers of candied citrus, toasted almond and a chalky mineral undertow carry through to a long, lingering finish that settles into dried citrus zest and soft spice. This is dessert wine made with grace, sweet but never cloying, opulent but never heavy.
For when: the lights are low, the music soft, and dessert or simply the moment calls for something timeless.
Pairs with: blue cheese, almond biscotti, fruit tarts, or a slice of quince paste with walnuts.

- Producer Information
Château Dereszla is one of Tokaj’s great historic estates, with documented roots dating back over six centuries. Its cellars are carved deep into volcanic stone and have sheltered generations of Aszú wines, each shaped by the region’s unique terroir of rhyolite tuff, loess, and noble botrytis. The estate sits on the eastern side of Tokaj-Hegyalja, where morning mists and long, gentle autumns create the perfect conditions for the slow concentration and shrivelling of grapes that define true Aszú.
Under the stewardship of the D’Aulan family (also known for their historic Champagne legacy), Dereszla has undergone significant investment and modernisation since the early 2000s, seamlessly blending centuries-old craft with precision winemaking. Their approach focuses on hand selection of botrytised berries, gentle pressing, long ageing in traditional underground cellars and meticulous blending, all key to preserving Tokaj’s signature balance of sweetness, acidity, and minerality.
Today, Château Dereszla stands as one of the benchmark producers of the region, crafting Aszú wines celebrated for their purity, finesse, and longevity. Each bottle is a quiet expression of Tokaj’s volcanic soul, refined, luminous, and unmistakably noble.
