2020 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Berton Vineyard

Coonawarra, Australia

This is classic Coonawarra Cabernet with a generous Australian glow. Ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry lead the nose, followed by tobacco leaf, chocolate mint, eucalyptus, cedar spice and a touch of toasty oak. It has the unmistakable cassis-and-mint character that makes Coonawarra so loved, but with extra polish and depth from the Reserve treatment.

On the palate, it is full-bodied, smooth and richly flavoured, with dark berry fruit, soft but dense tannins and a long, warming finish. The structure is there, but it is not hard work; bottle age has helped the wine settle into a more rounded, savoury style. A brilliant choice for Cabernet drinkers who want depth, comfort and that cool Coonawarra edge in the same glass.

Berton Vineyard was founded by Bob and Cherie Berton in the mid-1990s, beginning with vines planted on the rugged slopes of High Eden in South Australia. What started as a small, determined project has grown into one of Australia’s most reliable names for expressive, well-priced wines with genuine regional character.

Today, Berton works across several important Australian regions, pairing its own vineyard heritage with carefully sourced fruit from areas known for particular varieties and styles. Coonawarra is a natural home for Cabernet Sauvignon, thanks to its terra rossa soils, cooling maritime influence and long reputation for reds with cassis, mint, structure and ageing potential.

The 2020 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from two parcels within the same vineyard in Coonawarra’s prized terra rossa country. One parcel comes from a slightly more elevated part of the vineyard, bringing a more subtle fruit profile, while the region’s red loam over free-draining limestone gives the wine its classic Cabernet structure and freshness.

The grapes were fermented for 10 days in rotary fermenters at 26 to 30°C, then pressed into stainless steel, where the wine completed malolactic conversion. It was matured for 14 months in new and old French and American oak barrels, with only the best parcels selected for the final blend.

Now with a little bottle age, this Reserve Cabernet is drinking in a smooth, satisfying place. The fruit is still dark and generous, but the tannins have softened, and the oak has settled into cedar, tobacco and chocolate-mint complexity. Alcohol is 14.5%, the wine is sealed under a screwcap, and it is suitable for vegetarians.
