2022 Morgon Côte du Py Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Jean Foillard
Beaujolais, France
Domaine Jean Foillard wines have achieved cult like status in Morgon.
The 2022 Morgon Côte du Py Vieilles Vignes is a quintessential expression of Jean Foillard’s commitment to natural winemaking and the unique terroir of Morgon. Crafted from 100% Gamay grapes sourced from old vines, some over 60 years old, planted on the renowned Côte du Py’s granite and schist soils, this wine embodies the depth and elegance characteristic of the region.
It opens in the glass with an inviting bouquet of ripe red fruits, including raspberry and cherry, complemented by floral notes and subtle hints of spice and minerality. The palate is fresh and vibrant, showcasing juicy red fruit flavours with a velvety texture. Well-integrated acidity and fine tannins provide structure, leading to a persistent and elegant finish.
While approachable now, the 2022 Morgon Côte du Py Vieilles Vignes has the potential to evolve gracefully over the next 10 to 15 years.

Jean and Agnès Foillard took over the Domaine from Jean’s father in 1980. It wasn’t long before their wines reached the cult-like status they enjoy today. Early on, Jean began to follow the teachings of Jules Chauvet, a traditionalist who defied everything that the more commercial brands were touting in the region. Jean and three other local vignerons, Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton, soon joined in on the movement. This Gang of Four, as christened by famous American importer Kermit Lynch, called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification – starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulphur dioxide or none at all, and refusing both chaptalization and filtration.
The wines are a true and natural expression of Morgon. With access to the very best vineyards in one of the most renowned areas of the appellation, the ‘Côtes du Py’, and 60-year-old vines, Jean’s wines are full of life and character and show incredible depth and purity
Adhering to traditional methods, the grapes undergo semi-carbonic maceration and fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for approximately 6 to 9 months in used oak barrels, allowing the pure fruit expression to shine without the influence of new oak.
