1986 Domaine du Pin Armagnac, Darroze (Gift Box)

Bas-Armagnac, Gascony, France

Nougat & Tobacco

Graceful and enticingly fragrant, this 1986 Domaine du Pin opens with candied orange peel and nougat, followed by gingerbread, liquorice and vanilla. Tobacco adds a gently savoury counterpoint, giving the bouquet depth and definition. Its charm lies in the way these flavours unfold, with citrus brightness running through the sweeter, spice-inflected aromas.

The palate is velvety and beautifully composed, retaining a freshness that brings lift to its mature character. Orange and nougat carry through the centre, while liquorice and tobacco lend a more contemplative quality to the finish. There is richness to savour, but also a delicacy that keeps the experience engaging. Already mature and ready to enjoy, this is a distinctive vintage gift and a rewarding bottle for anyone who values finesse in an aged spirit.

For when: A special date deserves to be remembered slowly.

Pairs with: Orange and almond cake, honey nougat, gingerbread with poached pears, vanilla panna cotta, dark chocolate orange truffles or hazelnut dacquoise.

Domaine du Pin covers just four hectares in Labastide-d’Armagnac, in the Landes department of south-west France. This vintage bottling belongs to Darroze’s Collection Unique, preserving the identity of one estate and one harvest year. Its equal proportions of Baco and Colombard give it a distinct place within the collection, while the gift-box presentation makes it particularly suited to marking a meaningful year.

Darroze’s foundations lie in the culinary traditions of Gascony. Through his father Jean’s restaurant in Villeneuve-de-Marsan, Francis Darroze developed an appreciation for the region’s eaux-de-vie. From the late 1960s, he travelled through Bas-Armagnac, selecting distinctive spirits from small estates and overseeing their maturation and bottling.
Today, the house works with around thirty estates, with cellars in Roquefort and Labastide-d’Armagnac. Domaine du Pin stands on the sandy, iron-rich soils known as sables fauves, characteristic of Bas-Armagnac. These well-drained soils, together with the region’s Atlantic-influenced climate, provide the setting for its aromatic, finely balanced spirits.
Marc Darroze continues the family’s commitment to individual origins and patient cellar work. Collection Unique keeps each estate and vintage separate, allowing their particular qualities to remain clear. Bottling without dilution preserves the character developed during maturation, making provenance and careful ageing central to every release.

The 1986 Domaine du Pin is made from equal parts Baco and Colombard. The grapes were gently pressed and fermented dry, producing a base wine intended to retain freshness and acidity before distillation. Malolactic conversion and sulphur additions were avoided.
Following distillation, the eau-de-vie entered new oak before transfer to older barrels. This sequence provided an initial contribution of structure, followed by slower maturation with less wood extraction, helping preserve the fruit character.
Ageing continued in cool, humid cellars, where gradual evaporation concentrated the flavours and naturally reduced the alcohol. This release was bottled at a cask strength of 42.5%. Its exact age is determined by the bottling date, which is not specified here.
Alcohol: 42.5%. Bottle size: 70cl. Cask strength. Vegan.
