2024 Sundance Viognier, Tumbleweed

Breedekloof, South Africa

Peach blossom, ripe apricot and juicy stone fruit rise from the glass, lifted by fresh citrus and a delicate touch of vanilla. Expressive and perfumed, but never overpowering, this captures Viognier’s exotic character with welcome clarity and restraint.

The palate is generous and softly rounded, with layers of peach, nectarine and citrus carried by bright, refreshing acidity. Fermentation and lees ageing in neutral oak build texture without introducing obvious wood flavour, while the absence of malolactic fermentation keeps the finish fresh, floral and beautifully poised. A characterful alternative to Chardonnay with plenty of food-friendly appeal.

For when: Dinner is fragrant, gently spiced and anything but ordinary.

Pairs with: Thai green curry, seared scallops, lobster bisque, roast chicken with tarragon, Moroccan vegetable tagine or creamy soft cheeses.

Sundance comes from Breedekloof, where vineyards lie between dramatic mountain ranges and experience warm sunshine tempered by cooler air. Sandy soils and a mixture of trellised and bush vines produce Viognier with ripe aromatic fruit, freshness and an elegant texture.

Tumbleweed is part of the adventurous portfolio created by South African winemaker Bruce Jack. Its identity was inspired by the wild, windswept landscapes of the Swartland, where dry hills, old vineyards and determined growers helped reshape perceptions of modern Cape wine. The range carries that pioneering spirit into carefully chosen combinations of grape and place, including this Breedekloof Viognier.

Bruce Jack brings extensive international experience to the project. After studying winemaking at Roseworthy in Australia and working across France, Australia and the United States, he returned to South Africa and founded Flagstone in 1998. He later spent a decade overseeing major international wine brands before returning to his independent projects in 2018.

His approach combines expressive fruit with gentle, technically precise winemaking. Individual vineyards are selected for personality rather than reputation alone, and oak is used to shape texture without overwhelming varietal character. Tumbleweed offers an accessible introduction to this philosophy, matching distinctive labels with wines that are generous, energetic and strongly connected to their source. A percentage of profits from Bruce Jack Wines also supports the HeadStart Trust, which funds educational and musical opportunities in disadvantaged rural communities.

Made from 100% Viognier grown in Breedekloof on predominantly sandy soils. The vineyard selection includes both trellised and traditional bush vines. The grapes were harvested by hand to protect their aromatic character and brought to the winery for destemming, gentle crushing and pressing.

After settling in stainless-steel tanks, the clear juice was transferred into neutral oak barrels ranging from 225 to 300 litres for alcoholic fermentation. Older barrels were chosen to develop texture and complexity without covering Viognier’s natural floral and stone-fruit character with new oak flavours.

Malolactic fermentation was deliberately avoided to preserve acidity and freshness. The wine then matured for six months on its fine lees in neutral oak, with regular stirring adding softness and breadth to the palate. It is dry, sealed under screwcap and suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Alcohol: 14%. Residual sugar: 3.2g/L. Total acidity: 5.6g/L. pH: 3.52.
