2024 Omaka Reserve Chardonnay, Saint Clair

Marlborough, New Zealand

Ripe peach, preserved lemon and grapefruit lead the aroma, layered with toasted cedar, vanilla, almond and warm spice. Flint and a subtle pastry note bring extra complexity, giving this an assured, full-flavoured character without losing its freshness.

Rich and beautifully textured, with creamy stone fruit and savoury oak balanced by precise citrus acidity. Lees ageing adds weight and a luxurious mouthfeel, while the long, toasty finish remains focused and refreshingly dry. A confident Marlborough Chardonnay for anyone who enjoys generous fruit, carefully judged oak and plenty of detail.

For when: Roast chicken is in the oven, and only a proper Chardonnay will do.

Pairs with: Lemon and garlic roast chicken, grilled lobster, turbot, creamy mushroom pasta, pork tenderloin or cauliflower cheese.

Omaka Reserve is selected from the finest Chardonnay barrels produced by Saint Clair. Fruit comes primarily from the Omaka Valley, where warm days, cool nights and clay-based soils create Chardonnay with ripe flavour, natural freshness and the structure to carry oak beautifully.

Neal and Judy Ibbotson were pioneers in the Marlborough wine industry, first planting vineyards in the valley in 1978 and then establishing Saint Clair Family Estate in 1994. They own 160 hectares of vineyard in 10 different Marlborough locations chosen specifically for the attributes of their individual “terroir” and ability to produce top-quality grapes. Neal Ibbotson combines his extensive expertise in viticulture with the talent of one of New Zealand’s leading winemaking teams led by Hamish Clark. Since 1994, when wines from the first vintage all won medals including gold, the name Saint Clair has been synonymous with quality and its award-winning record continues today. This is a sentiment shared by Bob Campbell MW, who says “Saint Clair now makes the country’s and perhaps the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc”.

The 2024 Omaka Reserve is made from 100% Chardonnay sourced primarily from Saint Clair’s vineyards in Marlborough’s Omaka Valley. The area combines warm daytime temperatures with cool nights, while its clay-based soils help the grapes retain flavour and freshness. The blend is drawn from several Chardonnay clones, led by Mendoza and Burgundian clone 95.

The vines were closely monitored throughout ripening and the grapes harvested by hand once they had achieved full flavour and physiological maturity. The fruit was lightly whole-bunch pressed before fermentation in oak barrels using selected yeast strains. Seventeen per cent of the barrels were new.

The wine underwent malolactic fermentation, followed by nine months on its yeast lees with regular stirring to develop creaminess, weight and savoury complexity. Only the strongest individual barrels were selected for the final Omaka Reserve blend. Alcohol: 13%. Residual sugar: 2.36g/L. Acidity: 5.8g/L. pH: 3.11.
