2023 Pinot Noir 'El Compadre', Viña Echeverría

Valle De Malleco, Chile

Spiced cherry, raspberry and dark blueberry rise from the glass, joined by hibiscus, violet and a delicate thread of wild herbs. There is an appealing brightness to the aromatics, with the wine’s cool southern origins giving its fruit a lifted, energetic personality.

Silky and supple on the palate, this is Pinot Noir built around freshness rather than weight. Fine tannins and vivid acidity frame the ripe red fruit, while discreet French oak brings gentle spice and texture. Graceful, expressive and immediately drinkable, it offers plenty of character for the money and a fascinating glimpse of Chile’s emerging cool-climate south.

For when the evening calls for something red, elegant and slightly adventurous.

Pairs with Roast duck, grilled salmon, herb-roasted chicken, pork tenderloin or wild mushroom risotto.

Viña Echeverría is a family-run Chilean winery with roots stretching back to the 1930s and an agricultural heritage reaching much further. El Compadre shows the family’s exploratory side, taking Pinot Noir from the remote, rain-cooled Malleco Valley and shaping it with sensitive, low-intervention winemaking.

Viña Echeverría is a family-owned and managed Chilean winery whose agricultural story began after the Echeverría family arrived from Spain’s Basque Country in the 1750s. Its modern wine history took shape in 1930, when French engineer Roger Piffre de Vauban planted ungrafted vines of French origin at La Estancia in Molina and equipped the cellar with technology brought from France.

Roberto Echeverría returned to Chile in 1979 with the ambition of rebuilding the family business as a modern, quality-focused winery. He replanted the vineyards, constructed a new cellar and released the family’s first wines internationally in 1993. Today, the estate remains under family control, with Roberto and his children Paulina, Viviana, Roberto Jr and Diego actively involved.

Chief winemaker Roberto Echeverría Jr has led production since 2001. His approach combines Chile’s vivid fruit with the restraint and structure associated with the family’s French heritage. Precision in the vineyard, careful harvesting and measured oak use underpin a broad range of expressive wines.

The winery holds Sustainable Wine of Chile status and ISO 9001-HACCP certification. El Compadre also demonstrates its willingness to look beyond its traditional Curicó base, sourcing Pinot Noir from the cool, volcanic landscape of Malleco to produce a fresh and distinctive expression of southern Chile.

El Compadre is made from 100% Pinot Noir grown in the Valle de Malleco, one of Chile’s most southerly and coolest wine regions. High annual rainfall, pronounced differences between daytime and night-time temperatures and well-drained volcanic soils encourage slow ripening, aromatic intensity and naturally fresh acidity.

The grapes underwent a cool pre-fermentation maceration at 10°C for four to five days. Fermentation followed in stainless-steel tanks with wild yeasts, lasting between 12 and 15 days at controlled temperatures of 23°C to 27°C. A further five days of skin contact took place after fermentation, and the entire wine completed malolactic conversion.

Seventy-five per cent of the wine matured in French oak barrels for six months, adding texture and gentle spice without overwhelming the fruit. The finished wine has 14% alcohol, is suitable for vegans and vegetarians, and is bottled under screwcap.
