Chianti Classico
Chianti Classico is the real heart of Tuscany: rolling hills, cypress-lined roads, woodland, olive groves and Sangiovese at its most expressive. Sitting between Florence and Siena, this historic DOCG region produces wines that are bright, savoury, food-loving and unmistakably Italian. Expect red cherry, wild strawberry, violet, dried herbs, spice, leather and that classic Tuscan freshness that makes the next sip feel inevitable.
The magic of Chianti Classico lies in the landscape. Vineyards are planted across hillsides, ridges and old stone terraces, often on soils rich in galestro, alberese, clay, limestone and sandstone. These poor, stony soils naturally limit vigour, helping Sangiovese develop perfume, structure and that fine, mouth-watering grip that makes the wines so brilliant with food.
Sangiovese is the soul of Chianti Classico, bringing red fruit, acidity, tannin and savoury detail. Producers may blend in traditional grapes such as Canaiolo and Colorino, or small amounts of approved international varieties, though the best wines always keep Sangiovese firmly in the spotlight. Winemaking varies from bright, stainless-steel freshness to longer ageing in large oak casks, French barrels or traditional botti, with Riserva and Gran Selezione wines offering greater depth, structure and ageing potential.
What makes Chianti Classico so special is its balance of charm and seriousness. A good bottle can be joyful and easy with pasta, pizza or roast chicken, while the finest examples from top estates and single sites can age beautifully, gaining notes of tobacco, truffle, leather and dried flowers. This is Tuscany in a glass: elegant, rustic, refined and always ready for the table.
