2019 Stevens Road Chardonnay, Xanadu

Margaret River, Australia

”Electric Precision”

This is Margaret River Chardonnay turned up to fine detail. The 2019 Stevens Road opens with a flash of energy, grapefruit zest, lemon curd and white peach, edged with a subtle hint of butterscotch and toasted almond that adds warmth without weight. The aromatics feel pristine and tightly coiled, poised rather than showy.

On the palate, it is electric. A surge of citrus and stone fruit drives through the centre, balanced by fine oak polish and a mineral spine that keeps everything razor clean. There is texture here, a gentle creaminess from careful élevage, yet the overriding impression is lift and clarity. The acidity carries the wine long and true, stretching the finish into something crisp, saline and quietly thrilling. Powerful but precise, this is Chardonnay that moves with confidence and control.

For when you want something serious, structured and beautifully charged.
Pairs with grilled lobster, roast chicken with lemon and thyme, or creamy seafood pasta.
If this wine were a sensation, it would be cool ocean spray on warm skin, fresh, invigorating and unforgettable.

Producer
Xanadu’s Stevens Road vineyard, located in the Wallcliffe subregion of Margaret River, is one of the estate’s most prized sites. Block 2, just three kilometres from the winery, consistently produces fruit of exceptional pedigree, bottled separately to honour its character. This limited production single vineyard Chardonnay reflects Xanadu’s philosophy of selecting only the very best rows from the finest blocks. In 2019, a cooler vintage delivered pristine fruit and natural acidity, allowing Stevens Road to showcase its signature purity, tension and long-lived elegance.

Notable Awards
97 Points - James Halliday We may intellectualise wine, but at its heart, it is an emotional pursuit. This 2019 Stevens Road provided a moment of unadulterated joy when I drank it on Christmas Day. The salty acid and taut citrus fruit cut through the conversation and the heat of the day, injecting pleasure and calm. This is svelte, with salty limes. Briney and delicious. Buy both the 2019 Reserve and Stevens Road chardonnays: cellar the Reserve, drink this.

Xanadu is a true pioneer of the Margaret River region producing fresh and vibrant coastal wines. The estate was established by Dr John Lagan, an Irishman, who arrived in Margaret River in 1968. Captivated by the pioneering spirit of the region, along with his wife Eithne, he planted his first vines in 1977. Inspired by the beauty of the setting, they named the property after the mysterious, idyllic paradise in Samuel Coleridge’s poem, Kubla Khan: Xanadu. True to its poetic namesake, Xanadu is in an idyllic setting, where 65 hectares of vines flourish on the original estate. Passionate and dedicated winemaker Glenn Goodall joined in 1999, combining intuitive winemaking, and a deep respect for the sustainably cultivated vineyard- which is a member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia- he produces world-class wines of distinction. Glenn was awarded Halliday’s ‘Best Winemaker of the Year Australia 2023’ and in 2018 Xanadu won the Jimmy Watson memorial trophy.
