Gavin Chanin founded Chanin Wine Co. in 2007 with a clear purpose: to produce poised, vineyard-led Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the finest cool-climate sites in Santa Barbara County. He began working harvests at just 18, learning under Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat and Bob Lindquist of Qupé before progressing to assistant winemaker at both estates. Time spent in Burgundy, Italy, South Africa and New Zealand further shaped his thoughtful, restrained approach.

Chanin focuses on vineyards where cool Pacific winds, marine-derived soils and a long growing season allow flavour to develop without sacrificing natural acidity. Many of the sites contain some of Santa Barbara County’s oldest vines, including Sanford & Benedict, planted in 1971 and home to the county’s oldest Pinot Noir vines. All the vineyards used by Chanin are organically or sustainably farmed.

In the cellar, the emphasis is on transparency rather than polish for its own sake. Chanin avoids excessive alcohol and unnecessary additives, uses native fermentations and bottles without filtration. The wines are elegant and energetic, with enough depth to age but an instinctive affinity with food. Gavin is also an accomplished artist, and each label features one of his own paintings, giving every bottle a fitting connection between landscape, craft and creative expression.

This wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir sourced from Zotovich and Sanford & Benedict vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills. The sites encompass a varied mix of marine-influenced soils, including diatomaceous earth, sand, shale and clay. Cool morning fog, persistent Pacific winds and long growing days encourage slow ripening, aromatic detail and vibrant acidity.

Chanin works with organically or sustainably farmed vineyards and follows a low-intervention approach in the cellar. Fermentation relies on native yeasts rather than commercial cultures, and the wines are made without added bacteria or enzymes. The Pinot Noirs typically include a modest proportion of whole clusters and restrained new French oak, although exact percentages for this cuvée have not been publicly confirmed. The wine is bottled without filtration and has 13.5% alcohol.
