Bright cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry rise from the glass, layered with rose petals, rhubarb and a subtle touch of cocoa. Fragrant and beautifully pure, this is Californian Pinot Noir with freshness, delicacy and none of the heavy sweetness sometimes associated with the region.

Silky and finely shaped on the palate, with juicy red fruit, refined tannins and an elegant savoury edge from partial whole-cluster fermentation. The oak sits quietly in the background, adding gentle texture rather than obvious flavour. Graceful, energetic and wonderfully composed, it captures the cooler side of Carneros with impressive clarity.

This Pinot Noir brings together three cool Carneros vineyards, each influenced by winds from San Pablo Bay. A combination of Dijon 777, Dijon 115 and Pommard clones provides fragrance, vibrant fruit and structure, while sensitive cellar work preserves the wine’s elegant character.

Scribe Winery was founded in 2007 by brothers Andrew and Adam Mariani, fourth-generation California farmers with a shared belief that expressive wine begins with a healthy, balanced vineyard. Their estate occupies a historic property at the southern end of Sonoma Valley, where German immigrant Emil Dresel planted vines and established one of the region’s pioneering wineries during the nineteenth century.

Wine production ended on the site during Prohibition, and the land subsequently passed through several lives, including a period as a turkey farm. The Mariani brothers began restoring the vineyards and buildings when they acquired the property, eventually reviving its nineteenth-century Hacienda as the heart of Scribe’s distinctive hospitality.

The farming philosophy centres on creating a diverse, functioning ecosystem and allowing each vineyard to express its own character. In the cellar, restrained, non-interventionist methods are used to preserve freshness, texture and a clear sense of place.

Scribe has become one of modern Sonoma’s most recognisable independent producers. Its wines combine Californian generosity with energy and precision, while the estate itself has developed a reputation for bringing wine, food, agriculture and creative culture together in a genuinely individual way.

Made from 100% Pinot Noir sourced from the Sandbach, El Novillero and Reinke vineyards within the Carneros AVA. The blend uses equal proportions of Dijon 777, Dijon 115 and Pommard clones, bringing together darker fruit, aromatic purity and structure.

Sandbach and El Novillero lie within five miles of the Scribe estate on Huichica soils. Reinke Vineyard sits farther east on Bressa-Dibble clay loam. Cooling winds from San Pablo Bay slow the ripening process and help the grapes retain natural acidity. The fruit was harvested by hand at night to preserve freshness.

Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats using native yeasts, with 30% of the fruit retained as whole clusters. The wine matured for seven months in French oak, comprising 90% neutral barrels and 10% new oak. It was bottled without fining.
