2023 Monterey Chardonnay, La Crema

Monterey County, California, United States

California Coastline Cream

Bright, generous and full of coastal charm, the 2023 Monterey Chardonnay is La Crema in its most sunny, easy-loving mood. Aromas of grilled pineapple, citrus blossom, tangerine and papaya lift from the glass, followed by white peach, key lime and honeydew melon on the palate. There’s a gentle touch of barrel spice and a cool river-stone freshness that keeps the wine balanced, giving it both creamy comfort and a clean, vibrant finish.

For when: roast chicken is golden and the evening needs a little Californian sunshine.
Pairs with: creamy pasta, grilled prawns, roast chicken or corn-fed chicken with herbs.
If this wine were a place: a sunlit Monterey terrace, with citrus trees, sea breeze and a very relaxed lunch.

La Crema has built its reputation on cool-climate California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, working across some of the state’s most expressive coastal regions. Monterey’s long growing season, ocean influence and bright sunshine give this Chardonnay its lovely balance of ripe fruit, freshness and soft, polished texture.

La Crema was founded in 1979 with its original name: La Crema Viñera, which translates as ‘best of the vine’. At this time, the Russian River Valley had yet to establish itself as one of California’s most significant regions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The first few vintages at La Crema were devoted to understanding the intricacies of cold-climate viticulture and winemaking. This family-owned winery continues to focus exclusively on cool-climate appellations. From its original home in the Russian River Valley, over the years, it has expanded to Monterey and Oregon’s Willamette Valley. The winemaking team is continually exploring these special regions, seeking areas where ocean winds and fog allow grapes to ripen slowly on the vine, developing complex flavours and aromas. Head winemaker Craig McAllister adds a personal touch, combining Burgundian winemaking techniques with contemporary Californian flair. This combination of meticulous site selection and boutique winemaking techniques produces uniquely expressive wines, full of finesse and elegance.

The Chardonnay grapes were hand-harvested and gently pressed, followed by static settling for 24 hours. The must was racked to barrel for fermentation, which took place with selected yeasts. The wine was then matured for four to five months in oak barrels, 70% American and 30% French.
