2022 Pinot Noir, Sanford
Sta. Rita Hills, Central Coast, California, United States
Pacific Coast Pinot
A beautifully poised Pinot from the cool, windswept Sta. Rita Hills. The 2022 opens with bright aromas of fresh cherry, wild strawberry and spice cake, lifted by white pepper, rose and dried flowers. On the palate, it is supple, serious and wonderfully fresh, with pure red fruit, a gentle savoury edge and fine, silky tannins. There’s brightness and precision throughout, finishing long with that lovely coastal energy Sanford does so well.
For when: you want Pinot Noir that feels effortless but still says something.
Pairs with: duck breast, grilled salmon, mushroom dishes or roast chicken.
If this wine were a place: evening fog drifting over vines above the Pacific.
The wine is drawn from the Sta. Rita Hills, with fruit coming from young vines in La Rinconada and Sanford & Benedict, two of the estate’s most historic vineyard sites. It was aged for 11 months in French oak, 25% new, which gives polish and subtle spice without losing the wine’s freshness. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate has awarded the 2022 90 points, noting its composed red cherry, rhubarb and spice box character and its fresh, well-balanced finish.
