2022 Chardonnay, Sanford
Sta. Rita Hills, Central Coast, California, United States
California, With Restraint
This is Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay in beautifully judged form, elegant rather than overblown, sunlit but sharpened by the coast. The 2022 opens with grilled lemon, dried flowers and chamomile, then widens into peach, tart pineapple and a touch of salty minerality. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and richly textured, with bright citrus, honeyed orchard fruit and a quiet line of freshness that keeps everything lifted and precise.Â
For when: you want Chardonnay with polish, not swagger.
Pairs with: roast chicken, buttered sole, or crab linguine.
If this wine were a place: a golden hillside with the Pacific just out of sight.
The 2022 estate Chardonnay comes from the Sta. Rita Hills, with fruit drawn predominantly from La Rinconada and a smaller portion from Sanford & Benedict, two of the region’s most historic vineyard sites. It saw malolactic fermentation in barrel and around 11 months in French oak, giving the wine its creamy texture and subtle nutty depth without losing the mineral, coastal energy that defines Sanford’s style.Â
