2022 Chardonnay, Sanford

Sta. Rita Hills, Central Coast, California, United States

California, With Restraint

This is Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay in beautifully judged form, elegant rather than overblown, sunlit but sharpened by the coast. The 2022 opens with grilled lemon, dried flowers and chamomile, then widens into peach, tart pineapple and a touch of salty minerality. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and richly textured, with bright citrus, honeyed orchard fruit and a quiet line of freshness that keeps everything lifted and precise.

For when: you want Chardonnay with polish, not swagger.
Pairs with: roast chicken, buttered sole, or crab linguine.
If this wine were a place: a golden hillside with the Pacific just out of sight.

The 2022 estate Chardonnay comes from the Sta. Rita Hills, with fruit drawn predominantly from La Rinconada and a smaller portion from Sanford & Benedict, two of the region’s most historic vineyard sites. It saw malolactic fermentation in barrel and around 11 months in French oak, giving the wine its creamy texture and subtle nutty depth without losing the mineral, coastal energy that defines Sanford’s style.

Sanford Winery is a renowned pioneer of cool-climate wine from the Sta. Rita Hills, north of Santa Barbera. The legendary Sanford & Benedict vineyard was planted in 1971 by Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict, and from the very first vintages, they produced highly acclaimed wines of great complexity. In 1980, the team of Michael Benedict and Richard Sanford would go their separate ways. Richard Sanford continued to make the wines, and subsequently planted the La Rinconada vineyard adjacent to the original vineyard. In 2002, the Terlato family became partners, by 2007 they bought the entire vineyard and have been making exceptional wines from these two sustainably cultivated Cru vineyards ever since.

The 100% estate fruit was hand-harvested, carefully selected and then gently destemmed. Each block was vinified separately, to reflect the personality of the vineyard. The grapes were whole bunch pressed into French oak where the juice underwent barrel fermentation. The wine spent eight and a half months maturing in 225 litre French oak barrels, of which 20% was new, to ensure the essence of the fruit and the nuances of the terroir were preserved while obtaining a soft texture balanced by vibrant acidity.
