2022 Chardonnay 'Along The Palms', Scribe Winery

Sonoma Valley, California, United States

Salted Sun

Pineapple, nectarine and crisp apple rise from the glass, joined by orange peel and a distinctive breath of sea spray. Bright and expressive, it offers California sunshine without excessive ripeness, oak or weight.

The palate is fresh, textured and beautifully focused, with juicy stone fruit held together by vibrant acidity. Notes of wet stone and citrus lead into a long, saline finish. There is generosity here, but also restraint and precision, making this a wonderfully refreshing alternative to richer Californian Chardonnay.

For when: California sunshine is required, whatever the weather outside.

Pairs with: Grilled squid, seared scallops, roast chicken, crab linguine, fish tacos or a butter bean and tomato salad.

Along The Palms reveals the brighter, more coastal side of Sonoma Valley Chardonnay. Stainless-steel maturation, fine-lees ageing and the prevention of malolactic conversion preserve its pure fruit, mineral tension and mouthwatering freshness.

Scribe Winery was founded in 2007 by brothers Andrew and Adam Mariani, fourth-generation California farmers with a shared belief that expressive wine begins with a healthy and balanced vineyard. Their estate occupies a historic property at the southern end of Sonoma Valley, where German immigrant Emil Dresel established one of the region’s pioneering wineries during the nineteenth century.

Wine production ended on the property during Prohibition, and the land subsequently became an orchard and turkey farm. When the Mariani brothers arrived, they began restoring the vineyards, surrounding ecosystem and the estate’s remarkable nineteenth-century Hacienda.

Scribe’s philosophy centres on farming in harmony with the wider landscape and allowing each site and season to shape the wine. The cellar approach is similarly restrained, using careful handling and minimal intervention to retain freshness, texture and a clear sense of origin.

The winery has developed a distinctive reputation within modern Sonoma, combining serious, terroir-driven wines with a relaxed Californian identity. Along The Palms captures that personality beautifully, offering ripe fruit and inviting texture while retaining the brightness and savoury freshness that make Scribe’s wines so immediately recognisable.

Made from 100% Chardonnay grown in Sonoma Valley. The bunches were whole-cluster pressed, after which the juice was cold settled for 24 hours and separated from its gross lees.

A long, cool fermentation took place using selected yeasts. The wine then matured in stainless-steel tanks for approximately four to six months, preserving its pineapple, citrus and mineral character without adding oak flavours.

It rested on its fine lees without stirring, developing subtle texture while maintaining freshness. Malolactic conversion was prevented, retaining the wine’s crisp acidity and precise saline finish.

Alcohol: 12.5%. Residual sugar: below 3g/L. Total acidity: 7.3g/L. Suitable for vegans and vegetarians. Sealed with a natural cork.
