2018 Cabernet Franc Mini Ediciones, Finca Decero

Mendoza, Argentina

Sleek, seductive, and perfectly poised, this is Cabernet Franc with an Argentine accent. The 2018 Mini Ediciones opens with lifted aromas of cassis, violet, graphite, and a touch of green peppercorn, before revealing a palate of black cherry, cocoa nib and fine spice. It’s beautifully structured, silky tannins glide beneath the fruit, the acidity bright and mountain-fresh. There’s a quiet intensity to it, a sense of precision and altitude that makes every sip hum with energy and finesse.

For when: Dinner’s special, and so is the company.
Pairs with: Chargrilled lamb, aubergine parmigiana, or dark chocolate by the fire.

At the foothills of the Andes, Finca Decero, literally “from scratch”, was born from an unplanted patch of land in Agrelo, Mendoza. Founded in 2000 by Swiss entrepreneur Thomas Schmidheiny, the estate is known for its high-altitude vineyards, sustainable practices, and unwavering focus on quality over quantity. The Mini Ediciones range is crafted only in exceptional years, in minute volumes that showcase the finest parcels of the Remolinos Vineyard. The 2018 vintage, long and temperate, produced grapes of superb balance and aromatic clarity. Aged 18 months in fine French oak, this Cabernet Franc captures the elegance of the variety with the precision and purity that define Finca Decero’s quietly luxurious style.

Born of the world-class vision of Swiss owner Thomas Schmidheiny, Finca Decero is an acclaimed wine estate and the location of our one-of-a-kind Remolinos vineyard in Agrelo, Mendoza.
In 2000, the decision was taken to start “from scratch” (as Decero means). Unencumbered by history, starting with a blank canvas they were able to make critical early decisions which determined our path towards establishing an exceptional wine estate.
First and foremost was the carefully considered site selection of virgin land in the highest part of Agrelo. At an altitude of 1050m/3500ft, this land was chosen for its pristine water quality of glacial meltwater from an underlying aquifer and a unique tapestry of soils unmatched in the surrounding area. In these early days, they extensively analysed the environment both below and above ground and consequently made variety and clone selections specifically suited to areas within the vineyard.

25-30 days total maceration: 5-7 days cold soak; 10 days fermentation in small wide stainless steel tanks. 78°f for most aromatic parcels and 86°f for parcels with more concentration to derive more texture; 15-18 days extended maceration.
Gently basket pressed before 90% goes into French oak barrels (30% new) for malolactic fermentation and 14 months maturation. 10% remains in tank to preserve the delicate violet aromatics.
