2024 Corton-Charlemagne, Domaine Patrick Javillier

Corton-Charlemagne, Burgundy, France

The Limestone Crown

Majestic, concentrated and still tightly coiled, this Corton-Charlemagne opens with yellow plum, white peach and lemon curd, layered with jasmine, roasted almond, ginger and a distinctive smoky note. Hints of toasted brioche, crushed stone and savoury spice emerge with air, revealing a wine of remarkable depth and complexity.

Broad and powerful on the palate, yet driven by energy, the wine combines dense orchard fruit with vibrant acidity and a commanding mineral backbone. Its texture is generous and finely layered, with citrus, almond and gentle spice building towards a long, dry and intensely saline finish. Impressive already, but this is a Grand Cru built to unfold gradually over many years.

For when: The bottle needs to be every bit as memorable as the occasion.

Pairs with: Lobster, roast turbot, scallops, langoustines, roast chicken with morels, veal in a cream sauce or mature Comté.

Domaine Patrick Javillier farms just 0.17 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne within Les Pougets on the Aloxe-Corton side of the hill. The vines were planted in 1984 on a fully south-facing slope of clay and limestone. Production is always tiny, normally around 1,200 bottles, and approximately half the crop was lost in 2024, making this vintage particularly scarce.

Domaine Patrick Javillier is a family-run estate based in Meursault, with approximately 11 hectares of vineyards spread across five communes of the Côte de Beaune. The domaine’s modern story began in 1945, when Raymond Javillier returned from the war and took responsibility for two hectares of family vines. His son Patrick joined after completing his national diploma in oenology and oversaw his first harvest in 1974.

Patrick gradually expanded the estate through the 1980s and early 1990s, building an impressive collection of parcels in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses. Although the domaine owns only a small amount of Premier Cru and Grand Cru land, its meticulous treatment of every vineyard has established it as one of the most respected names in white Burgundy.

The next generation now plays a central role. Patrick’s daughter Marion oversees the red wines and commercial side of the domaine, while Pierre-Emmanuel Lamy manages the vineyards and white-wine production. Corton-Charlemagne is the jewel of the estate, combining the richness of Javillier’s winemaking style with the power, mineral structure and longevity of the Corton hill.

The 2024 Corton-Charlemagne is made entirely from Chardonnay grown in the domaine’s tiny parcel within Les Pougets. The grapes were harvested by hand, carefully sorted and gently pressed before the juice was settled and transferred to barrel.

Fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts and was followed by malolactic fermentation. Unlike some of the domaine’s Meursault wines, no new oak was used. The wine was fermented and matured entirely in one-year-old barrels, bringing controlled texture and subtle spice without masking the intensity of the vineyard.

Corton-Charlemagne receives a longer élevage than the rest of the domaine’s range, remaining in wood for a second winter before further maturation on its fine lees. It was bottled with minimal fining and filtration to preserve its concentration, structure and considerable ageing potential.
